Nice!

I remember that colour scheme. I think we have the same year bike because I remember seeing that one in the store (mine was blue/white) and the stickers were the same colour. I'm not sure if it's 87 or 88...

What gearing and tires do you have? I got 47x17T and 26x1.2"

And what saddle is that?

Gearing is 38x14 using 1.125 serfas 26" tyres.

Seat is Selle Italia San Merino (I think?). 20 odd years of arse moulding has made it super comfy if a little worse for wear.

I am now riding a Fuji Track and am in the process of making this a fixed mtb.

Quote: Hi,

I'm pondering with the possibility of converting my old 1988-ish Specialized Rockhopper into a fixie.
Nice bike except for the U-brake. 1988 was the only year they used it on a Rockhopper.

Quote: Here's what I think I need to do, please correct me if I'm wrong:

- Remove cassette and freewheel and replace with something like a Surly fixxer, a cog and some spacers
- Remove extra front chainrings get one more suitable, depending on the gearing I want to use (will ask the locals for the best combo for our not totally flat city, and adjust to compensate 26 inch wheels)
- Replace chainring bolts with BMX chainring bolts
- Get a new chain
- Rip off a bunch of stuff, but not the front brake.
- Replace headset (has nothing to do with fixxing the bike, but the current one is dead)

Am I missing something???

Thanks!
Sounds good. Good luck and post some pictures.

85, 86 and 87 were the original Rockhoppers with the old school geometry. They had cantilevers in the front and back. 1988 started version II, more modern geometry, 1988, only year, had a U-brake, in the rear. In 1989 they had cantis on both ends. The 1988's were 6 sp while most 89's were 7 sp. Hope that helps.

87 Rockhopper. Powdercoated and set up as a fixed gear. This bike gets lot of errand use around town.

what wheel is that on the back? I didn't know they made 26in fixed wheels...or did you build it up like that?

They're not all that hard to build up. I built mine around an old sansin fixed/fixed hub.

Not sure who you're asking but I got a Steelwool hub with a sun cr18 rim and had it built at my LBS.

This is the reason this thread was brought back after a year of dormancy?
