Bigbris, most ebay sellers are selling legitimate goods, it would be pretty risky with paypal buyer protection as well as a documented sale in ebay history.

In all likelyhood, the bike was flipped on the street shortly after it was stolen. Thieves/shady guys walk around NYC all the time saying bike for sale...bike for sale... trying to make whatever bit of cash they can and then get away. 11201's best bet is to keep looking for it on the street -it might be converted to freewheel, or a brake rigged up, but keep an eye out at food delivery places and supermarkets. I've known it to happen many times - the thief will sell it to a working delivery dude who then swaps his bike for this new one.

ndnyc212 07-21-08 09:28 PM

most likely flipped on the streets that same nite for a just a few hundred or less...ive personally seen this happen. delivery men usually use bikes supplied to them...

ill def keep an eye on tho, i ride les/chinatown/soho/financial district everyday

It's a sad day :<

Your bike was sexy, sorry it got stolen.

Did the thief cut through the locks, pry them open, or picked them? Inquiring minds would like to know, and could help us take better precautions to prevent this sort of thing.

interesting. i appreciate the info. is that what happened here? power tools?

any motherf*cker can cut a lock with a extended bolt cutter, anyone. that's all it takes. guy + van + bolt cutters = pile of stolen bikes.

11201ny 07-22-08 08:35 AM

i just found out that the u-locks i had were not NY (yellow) kryptonite u-locks. they were evolution series (orange), the next step down. only the NY (yellow) kryptonite u-locks are guaranteed by kryptonite

now i know this.

onewheeldrive 07-22-08 08:40 AM

There was absolutely no way that those u-locks were cut by bolt cutters.

Decent u-locks can't be cut with 48" bolt cutters. bottle jacks are a more common option.

The real question still hasn't been answered do you have evidence the lock rather than how you locked it or what you locked it too.

The kryptonite garauntee is a bull**** marketing ploy just like the NY only part of it.

"Q: I live in New York and own a Kryptonite lock. Am I still covered by Kryptonite's anti-theft protection offer?
A: Yes, but the offer is slightly different. Because of the New York State Law section 3446 of Chapter 187 of the laws of 1999, consumers purchasing Kryptonite U-lock and chains have an insurance program set up by Kryptonite. New York residents are now covered under a 1-year group insurance policy. The amount of the insurance policy will be the same as the amount of the anti-theft protection offer in other states (ie, New York Lock is $3,000). This policy is provided to you by Kryptonite free of charge, however it is not renewable. It is only good for one year."

"The Evolution series, Evolution series 4, KryptoLok series, KryptoLok series 2 and Bike Trap are not covered in New York City but are covered in the rest of the state. The only locks that are covered in New York City are the appropriately named, New York series of locks."

SheistyMike 07-22-08 08:55 AM

I've seen that policy, but that's some bull****. Like the angle grinder cares that the lock says New York on it...

stachemaster 07-22-08 09:04 AM

Why are you challenging him on this? If the lock was popped or leveraged open with a small jack, then the thief could've just picked up the lock when he carried the bike away. No metal filings, no liquid nitrogen stains, etc.

Shrubs in NYC? Now you're really pushing it.

I'm beginning to think you never locked it up. Or locked it to a shrub.

For what it's worth, your bike is probably leading a better life now somewhere outside the city.

nice

Maybe you didn't leave the bike where you thought you left it & it's still there? Was alcohol involved?

I know I have parked my car, then got smashed, then thought it was stolen because it wasn't where I thought I left it the next day. A couple of times, it was actually taken. By NYC Marshalls :notamused:

pink.terror why are you all over my sh*t?
don't you have anything better to do with your lonely life? aren't you missing a rerun of Day's of our Lives?

also (friendly advice), you should lower your gear ratio to something you can pedal, & stop taking your anger out here in the forums.

I'm aware of the policy and it's still bull****. The money is basically impossible to collect for anyone and the new york only specification is just about reinforcing the branding of the ny series of locks.

You still have only given us waffling and vague descriptions of how your bike was locked. Almost always when people are using high quality locks the theft is a result of what they locked too or how they locked it not the lock itself being broken. This is the basis for kryponites insurance policy and why it is bull****.

11201ny 07-22-08 09:29 AM

re-read the posts. ALL of the information is there.

iansmash 07-22-08 09:31 AM

is it really that ridiculous?

I bought the NYC chain lock specifically cus i wanted the extra protection in case my stuff gets jacked...now i'm disappointed with it.

So you did.

Your bike probably came off over the top or bottom of the sign. If not it was probably jacked, long ulocks are substantially weaker for this reason. You weren't using the idiotic lock rim only but through the rear triangle were you?

not only is the dude waffling and very vague, he is sending me private messages calling me names for even asking.

good luck getting an answer to that one.

11201ny 07-22-08 09:48 AM

lock sys was as solid as it could be. the lock was cut/clipped/bitten through.

if you see the bike let me know.
if you have the bike (pink.terror) be warned.

that's it.

bike manhattan 07-22-08 09:50 AM

I agree a guy simply removed the top the sign and lifted your bike up and over, the fault was not in the evolution u-locks but in the fact that you locked to a sign post. I always avoid sign posts and search for proper bike poles or parking meters. Either way, I really hope you get your bike back.
