Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? bah, i still have to upgrade my pedals, i can't ever get over the feeling like i can break them with my bare hands when i touch them. you know, the feeling when you hold a hollow chocolate or hold a christmas ornament and you know you can squeeze it with little force? I need something that feels more solid

where should i start with looking for pedals? people seem to like MKS sylvans here

Any of the Shimano SPD pedals would be a good start.

Okay, so I finally have to relube my chain that came on the messenger. all I have at home is the wax type stuff, forget what it's called. Do I have to thoroughly clean the chain of old oil for this wax stuff to work well? Or should I get some real oil type lube? Or can I just apply a drop to all the rollers as is and be fine?

I don't know about the wax stuff. I have read that you clean the living hell out of the chain, heat the wax, apply, and let dry. I could be wrong though, I am sure google could tell you.

What I use is 'tri-flow'. Simply spray on as you are spinning the cranks, wipe the chain WELL with a rag. Repeat. I do this as often as once a day, or as infrequent as once a week. Depends on riding conditions. You can do all this without any tear down of the bike which is convenient. The stuff works great.

IMO, one should maintain their drive train daily, if you ride daily.

No, it's not like the hot parafin wax stuff. I just used it it's called Ice Wax or something. You're just supposed to apply it to the rollers I guess. I cleaned up my chain well, then added the ice wax, was gonna ride it after it set for 10 minutes but it started raining pretty hard.

The guys at my LBS told me they all preferred this stuff over tri-flow, but I'm not really sure I trust them, haha.

They may be right, I don't know.
I do know that I have used tri flow for years and it has always worked for me.
I had a friend that swore by some kind of wax (not sure which), but when I inspected his chain/gears, he had all kinds of dirt, gunk, and particulates stuck to it. I assumed that the wax attracted this crap, so I stayed away from using it.
I would have to do some serious research before using wax on my chain.
But, hey, use what works for YOU.

This stuff seem to last as long as an oil based lube for you guys? And how often do you apply more.

It's not a huge point for me, because I'm hardly riding at all right now. Just ride for fun, and I haven't been getting up early enough to ride before work, and after work it's pitch black on rough streets with no streetlights.

I like the Shimano SPD m-520's that way you can wear a "walkable" shoe, as opposed to a road shoe. I like these shoes:https://www.performancebike.com/shop/...tegory_ID=2120

NO! leave the 'factory grease' on the chain. There is an article by S.B. about why this is important but I'm too lazy to look it up for you.

Any SPD pedals would be fine. If you are on a budget, I recommend these pedals from Bike Island. My S-i-L has them and they are not bad for $25 shipped.

Eggbeaters FTW! if you're going to be getting on and off the bike and walking. It's a classic design that just works.

hell yeah, yesterday i had mine built at the LBS next door while i was working , rode fixed for the first time home...at night....no lights...slightly intoxicated. very fun!

i HATE clips and straps...super ****ty, saddle induces ass pain, and i may end up chopping and flopping the bars. i plan on riding the tires and wheelset for a good while till i replace them. awesome bike!

Congrats on your new bike! Don't chop and flop the bars, get a real bullhorn.
