Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Was thinking about converting this I personally think it looks nice, seller wants 100 but I think I can go lower. However I didn't really find much through my current googling, help appreciated

Bikes: Raleigh 29er, IRO Angus frameset- random components, Giant Bowery, Raleigh Rush Hour frameset-future build

meh. For the price of what that probably costs you could get something far more suitable for fixed riding.

were you planning to go fixed or ss? if ss, you can use a singulator style ss "tensioner", but it will not get you any hipster cred.

Bikes: Specialized Rockhopper, Cannondale touring bike, Cannondale Black Lightning and a Cannondale Capo.

It will make a great fixie except for one drawback. It will require you to use a White Industries Eno Hub for the rear wheel which runs about $150 by itself. Otherwise you would have to run a chain tensioner and merely make it a SS. You do not want to run a chain tensioner with a fixed gear.

You can find a bike shop which can replace the dropouts for the appropriate Track fork end. That's just a suggestion, if you like the frame.

Cheers.

yea fail on me for missing the dropouts, but I was wondering if you guys could give me more info on this frame. this bike if I make it fixed isn't actually for me so if I know what I need and figure out how much it would cost then I could have the final word on this project. if I don't use this there is this old schwinn I kind of found

Stole?

You're going to drop a lot of money into fork, headset, BB, ENO hub, wheels etc. Economically, there's now way I'd buy into the kind of investment it would take to finish that project.

Actually the schwinn was at a swap meet, and we picked up. The Schwinn is going to be a lot easier, I'm trying to tell him to restore the paint, but he doesn't like the decals but he is going to keep the head badge. Pics of the build to come.

Sorry for the newbie question, but I've been looking for a place to ask this. Can someone explain to me why vertical dropouts even exist? I get that a bike with a derailleur doesn't need a horizontal dropout. But what would be the problem with it? Given that it allows the owner to convert the bike to singlespeed if desired.
