So I finally got al my parts together and went for my first fixie ride today, in the rain, with no brakes. It was awesome!! Everything was going great until I went to start off from a red light and my hub was stripped. 3 miles from home!!!

I had my 14t cog on the freewheel side of my brand new sovos hub. I had locktite on the lockring (bottom bracket) too. What caused this? Tomorrow im gonna go to my LBS and see if they have a real lockring and im gonna try again on the stepped threaded side.

Is there anything i can do to make sure i don't strip this side. I wasn't going fast and i wasn't on a downhill or anything. What a good hub that i can get for under $100 that won't strip? THanks for the help.

you probably need to make sure that your cog is on tight. i stripped my hub on my khs and had to buy a new one. as onetinsloth suggested, first put the cog on with the lockring and go ride ride for a bit with no backpedaling. second, come home and then retighten the lockring. maybe your cog is low quality? the cog and lockring are two things i would never skimp on since they are my lifelines.

First off, send the hub back to Sovos and get a refund. There is no excuse for striping threads after one ride. Then, go buy yourself a decent hub, like a Surly, Suzue Promax, or Kogswell/Van Dessel (same hub, but only if you have 135mm rear end). Finally, buy a Dura Ace or EAI cog and a DA lockring, and install.

Fixed it! All it took was some jbweld-ish stuff and a spacer. I put the cog and spacer back on the same side that stripped with generous amounts of the stuff and it works fine. It even got me to work this morning. I have another cog and lockring in the mail for the actual "fixed" side of the hub.

are they really that shoddy?
i've been riding my sovos hub for ... 5 years now w/o any major problems (knock knock). should i be scared? very scared?

i think the problem that steers most away from the sovos hubs is that they are terribly inconsistent, quality-wise. the same can be said of the suzue basic hubs. and a few other brands. i don't think i'd ever buy any hubset without checking the threads in person before hand....
