Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I have alot of stories of people yelling at me for being out of control and reckless and then later in the day getting bent out of shape that I wouldn't be able to get from point a to point b in less then 2 minutes. Or the calls from the mayors office to pickup jewlery for his wife or whatever, Menino is the mayor who has been very vocal about his dislike for bike messengers, but not so much that he won't use them. But thats not to say that some of the messengers down there aren't a bit out of control.

but a cop and some guy from the military are not private working citizens. For as much as I hated the plate I was ok with having that on my pretty little bike. But no way was I going to walk through offices, court houses, hospitals or shopping centers with a big stupid number on my back.

'and about that, maybe 10% of those peds actually use the crosswalks or crossing lights. I would really like to know how much the city of Boston wastes on painting crosswalks or runing those lights.

Well, yeah.

I've read a lot of this story, and it would appear that we can be nadered.

I guess I'd put a brake on my bike hooked to the handle by a string.

this isn't being 'nadered'.

nader was fighting for the people injured whilst driving a car that was inherently unsafe. nader was fighting the industry that produced that car.

this is stupid people asking to be protected from their own fu<king stupidity. if you cross the road against the traffic, expect to get hit. [it helps makes me feel much more acomplished when i cross succesfully]

there's a huge difference between the stupidity of individuals and the willful negligence and endagerment of life by a company [who's only reason for existence is profit].

Good point.

Nader decided something was unsafe and went about any method to figure out how or why. Some of his methods were questionable, at best. In the long run, he did little more than boost his image.

That aside, the term "Nader'd" is well understood.

Standby your man, if you like.

The term was meant to describe another issue all together.

Well... by that definition a clutch on a car is a brake as well . Mind you I am not disputing that many fixed gear riders can stop their brike and ride it safely without brakes, rather that at least some local vehicle codes may not consider leg braking to legally constitute a proper brake and therefore potentially open the rider up to liability or shield someone else from liability in the unfortunate event of an accident.

In any case my point was that law enforcement rarely makes a point of pulling a bicycle over for lacking all the equipment it might be legally required to have.
