i think there's a two-ring system similar to a cartridge bearing going on here. as speculated above, the black ring is stationary and fixed to the frame, and the silver one rolls on it. perhaps the drive side is toothed to allow for a shaft drive.

Damn, with a different saddle, seatpost, stem, handlebar, handlebar covering, wheelset and pedal set, that would be a really nice bike.

Nothing is wrong with the clipless pedals, per se. I like Eggbeaters a lot and have a set, myself and I use them for touring riding. However, on an NJS bike, I think a set of Royal Nuevos with clips and straps looks a lot better. This being a porn thread and, thus, all about looks and fully-kitted bikes, the sensible choice of Eggbeaters is the same as putting Birkenstock clogs instead of black patent leather stilettos on an actual porn starlet.
