Running a Quill on a Steamroller
Noob question but a friend is building up a Steamroller and has his heart set on a nitto quill. What steps do we need to take to make this happen? threaded fork? 1" or 1 & 1/8"? I have never owned a bike with a threadless stem and as such i am feeling like tits on a bull... useless
Help Please |
quill stems look really sharp on the steamroller, i have a threadless on mine but thinking about a quill for a future upgrade...i think you will need a different fork i could be wrong though

a quill stem versus a threadless stem would be a downgrade. Threadless is much stiffer and more functionally elegant than a quill stem.

i understand and agree that it is a downgrade but he is doing it for tarckish reasons. please don't hold that against him. well hold it against him, what do i care but i am still curious how to make it work.
|
good to know didn't realize the quill was less stiff...aesthetically though i think i prefer quills...the threadless works fine so i am no hurry to change it up
|
you will need:
-a threaded fork (make sure you get the right size for your frame) -a threaded headset -a quill stem go to your LBS, they will be able to tell you what size fork & headset you need, and order it for you that's it, simple that's it |
Old steamrollers were 1" I believe. Most nowadays are 1 and 1/8th, it would be counter-intuitive to part together a 1/8th threaded and stem but its doable.
|
first off, do not cut threads in to a threadless steerer. The walls arent thick enough to handle it.
You would need a headset like a chris king devolution or some adaptors (problemsolvers) to downgrade the head tube from 1 1/8 to 1". Then you would need a 1" threaded fork and also headset. Thats all. Its really not worth the money and trouble. |
couldn't he just thread the fork he has now?
|
No.
1) the walls of threadless forks are thinner than that of a threaded. Cutting threads in it would weaken it. 2) It would still be 1 1/8" The quil would just drop in the steer tube. Well, actually it would hit the starnut that was probably already there.... |

since he's building up the bike, as the OP said, it's not really a "downgrade." it's not like he's taking off a threadless headset and putting in a threaded.
it's been said already, but he needs a threaded fork, a threaded headset, and a quill stem... all need to be either 1" or 1 1/8" depending on the headtube size. threadless may be a little stiffer, but i have numerous quill stems and have never thought to myself "damn this is so flimsy." people have ridden hard on quill stems for decades. as for "functionally elegant" wtf does that mean? at best, it's an opinion. i think many on here would agree that a nice quill stem is way more "elegant" than a threadless, and just as "functional" |
or just use a nitto ct-80 stem for the almost-quill look.
|
you could sell the current steamroller and find an older one (pre 2002? anyone?) when they used threaded fork and stem.
I agree with a previous statement it not worth the time and money etc to modify the current bike. Unless you find a quill with removable faceplate, it is a pain in the caboose to change bars. Spend the cash on a good looking threadless stem which is just as nice as a quill and upgrade something else (wheels?) |
Okay to recap what i have read so far.
i know most of you think this is a waste and not worth the time/money but he wants to do it and so i am figuring it out for him as a favor. so i agree with you, i would not go to this effort. He starting with a frame so, not such a big deal to do this and since we are doing it... no threading a threadless. check the devolution headset looks to be a great idea from chris king and would be just what the dr. ordered. the rake on the spec'd surly fork is a 1-1/8 threadless with 38mm of rake. so correct me if i am wrong but i need to find a 38mm raked 1 inch threaded fork to go with the ck devolution headset. Any suggestions? Soma? 230 mm long? Thanks for all the help. |
no, if the spec fork is 1 1/8, then you need a 1 1/8 threaded. you can't interchange 1 1/8 to 1 without something like the devolution headset.
|
|
^ other way around
|
I thought he wanted to go threadless to quill?
Or am I completely confused? I've never done such a conversion. |
"no, if the spec fork is 1 1/8, then you need a 1 1/8 threaded. you can't interchange 1 1/8 to 1 without something like the devolution headset."
yeah so that is the plan. a devolution headset and a 1" fork. Problem is now trying to find a fork with the spec'd rake that is threaded. |
Okay I am completely confused.
I don't have much experience in this type of upgrade, so please forgive me. Does there exist an adapter that will let you use a quill stem with a threadless fork? Or do the adapters only do the opposite? |
