Surly 130mm hub Chainline...

I tried measuring the chainline on this hub but what I'm coming up with doesn't make sense. Does anybody know what the chainline for a Surly 3/32 cog mated to a Surly 130mm hub is? I checked Sheldon's site too and he never put the Surly 130mm hub on there.

Thanks.

I have this hub laced to a 20" rim on my fixed folding bike conversion. The chainline is 47mm.

Bikes: yes

A Surly track hub is a Surly track hub. How far the locknuts are spaced out does not affect the chainline. The chainline is a measurement from the center of the hub to the shoulder of the cog. 130mm is the measurement from one locknut to the other, which corresponds to the space between the dropouts or trackends on the bicycle.

Your chainline, according to Sheldon's data, is 36.22 (surly track) + 6.4 (surly 3/32 cog) = 42.64mm.

That's what I thought. So I guess the hub bodies are the same, it's just that the 130mm hub has a few extra spacers on the axle.

Unless it's not a Surly track hub? They sell them in 120 (track), 130 (Road) and 135 (Mtn). Surely they would not list them separately if the only difference is how far the locknuts are spaced out.

I've got the 130 on my stock Salsa Casseroll and by my eyeball it looks about 47mm.

I'n not an expert on these things. But Speed Goat lists different "center to flange" measurements between the track and 130 hub. Maybe they are wrong.

I am proficient in measuring, and my stock bike with a Surly 130 hub and Surly cog is about 47mm at the cog and 47mm at the chainring. Certainly not close to 42.64.

Response from Surly...

Tim,

The chainline on the 130mm hubs is 47.5mm. The 120mm hubs use a 43.5mm chainline.

Thanks,

Eric Sovern

That is correct. There’s a plus or minus of a mm or so, but that ought to get you where you need to be.

Eric,

Alright man. I'm just trying to get this straight. I tried measuring it and it didn't come out right.

So if I put a Dingle cog on this 130mm hub 47.5 would be dead center between the two cogs on the Dingle, right? And the teeth on the Dingle are 5mm apart, right? So the inner teeth would be at 45 (47.5 - 2.5) and the outer teeth would be at 50 (47.5 + 2.5), right?

Thanks for the help.
