id go with velocity deep v's. i know ALL the hipsters have em, but they are very strong. a friend of mine has had his for about 7 months now and he beats the **** outta them and theyre still in great shape. im in the process of ordering some myself.
does anyone have an update on those h+sons rims? i havent found a clear answer about whether or not theyre as sketch as everyone makes them sound.

After riding on deep vs for a good bit i've decided that they are not for me after riding an open pro set for awhile. Acceleration is way easier because they aren't so freaking heavy! I've got a set of open pros laced to dura ace hubs on the way, i've got a set of gold deep vs laced to formulas in great shape is some one is interested...

I have the H+Son rims to dura ace hubs and love em. They roll really smooth and look great.

To be honest I am still not sure about how sketch they are. I drop more than my share of curbs, ride hard on real crap roads, mess around with whirly birds. Put maybe 500 miles on em and have had no problems. They seem to be doing good enough, haven't come out of true even a little.
At the same time I am not dropping any stair sets or practicing bunny hops or taking on any mountain bike paths like I did my old wheel set (bontrager rear and original 1980's steel front). I don't want to be the person to find out his $110 rim splits when you drop a 3 stair, I can't afford that.

i've been riding velocity aeroheads on phil wood slrs for a few months now and really love them. i used to have a set of deep vs and couldn't get over how much better the aeroheads rolled when i first got them. last month the front wheel got eaten by an suv (since rebuilt) and the back needs its first real truing, but no complains otherwise. considering they see around 35-40 hours of use a week, i feel like they're holding up really well to street abuse.

For street riding? I've had two different sets of Open Pro's to Formula hubs on two different frames, never had a single complaint. I absolutely love them. I'm heavier rider and these wheels can take a beating. Especially with brass nipples and double butted spokes. Not as heavy as a Deep V setup, looks a lot classier with the low profile rim, and Formulas are perfect bang for your buck.
Otherwise, Cane Creek Volos or Track Vs

what are people's opinions on velocity track wheels? i know people generally have deep v's but what about their other choices? such as aeros, aeroheads and fusions?

Mavic Ellipse are the best off-the-peg track/fixed wheels out there. Light, strong, and not expensive at around $450.
Not the lightest or strongest or cheapest. But, you'd have to build a custom set to do better.

My fixed and ss wheels are mongrels: one 'set' ss is open pro rims, a white eno hub rear and chorus hub front; the fixed is open pros with surly rear hub and harris cyclery front hub.

If I were to build my "ultimate" street ss/fg wheelset it would be:
- Phil Wood (low flange, 28f/32r)
- DT Revolution spokes w/ brass nipples
- Mavic Open Pro clincher rims
29er wheelset:
- DT 240 ISO disc hubs (32f/32r)
- DT Revolution spokes (aluminum nipples)
- Stan's 355 tubeless rims
CX wheelset:
- DT 240 road hubs (28f/32r)
- DT Revolution spokes (aluminum nipples)
- Velocity Escape tubular rims

Had: black deep V's with fixed/fixed hub. Looked good. Sold em.
Now: Dura Ace LF rear hub, DB spokes to Open pro built at LBS__Pricey
Front is Campy LF hub, DB spokes to open pro off CL__ cheap.
Both are...strong, light and fast.
