Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? If I were going to make a dream wheelset I'd take formula hubs and install aftermarket bearings so they'd roll better than Phils for a lot less money. Then I'd use either Sapim or DT double-butted spokes and lace them 20/24 to a set of DT R1.2's. Just as strong as Velocity Deep Vs but much lighter and higher performance but with the same aero-benefits. I like Open Pros but that rim is an old design and modern stuff is lighter/stronger.

You've got the right idea there. My $330 wheelset consists of Sapim CXRays (24/28), laced to Niobium 30 rims, with formula rear track hub and front Speecific Perception road hub. No amount of bling will make wheels lighter, stiffer, or better performing.

Nice wheelbuild! Did you have to modify the hubs to use the CXRays? I really like the feel of double-butted spokes but I've always wanted to try bladed spokes for a racing wheelset. I'm glad there are a few of us who haven't drunk the Deep V Kool-aid! (They're great for clydes, tandems, and touring, don't get me wrong!)

Also running lf Phil's to Open Pro's, and can't say enough good about them! light enough to be a quick snappy fun wheel yet bombproof so I can commute in anything on the crappiest of roads and not bat an eye.

No. CXRays fit in normal spoke holes. CXRays are built from a very strongly butted spoke, so the flattened section is still narrow enough to fit through a normal round spoke hole. They'll basically work with any hub.

Gipiemme Tecno 716 Pista. 40mm deep Italian rims. None of this cracking business. I have thing for old 90's aero stuff, and the 716 is the last hold out of those older rims. Hubs look to be ok, but I would surely like to build some of these with Miche hubs. Tubular for track use

White Industries Track-to-Mavic CXP33's
Love these wheels!!!!!
Rode Surly to Deep V's for awhile. Nice but heavy.
The CXP33 is a nicer rim by far for the same $$$ as the Deep V pretty much. Not as "deep" but close and of course no colors.

My dream wheels would be Suntour Superbe hubs laced to Mavic CXP 30s. But, that's just a silly dream {sigh}.
