Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

fixed...what's the big deal?

Why do people react to fixed gears like it's this suicidal crazy person thing to do? this is how all bikes were at one point. if they did it back then and it was normal, why is it considered crazy now?

I dunno...I just don't see why it's so crazy. I love riding fixed, but I don't think I'm a nut or a "wildman" because I do it. I just don't get it...what's the big deal?

the thing I always notice about fixie riders is that they're always really into their riding and their rides...and the cyclists I know that ride regualr road bikes always seem annoyed or not happy or constantly upgrading and spending **** loads of money on these stupid weight saving variations on crap they already have.

I dunno...that's not meant as a dis and obviously I know not everyone that rides a regular bike is unhappy and all that...they're just my observations.

I think it's because the a lot of the North American population sees bikes as a toy, or something you use as a form of transportation until you get your driver's license. Firstly, you're considered nuts to commute to work when you could drive, even if it's only a couple of miles. Secondly, you're even more nuts to ride a bike with no brakes and lacking the ability to coast when you're tired. Their last memory of riding a fixed bike was that riding the tricycle they got as a youngster, barrelling down the driveway at "breakneck" speed, not being able to control the pedals cuz their feet slipped off and crashing into the parked car on the other side of the street, resulting in a softball-sized lump on his forehead.

It's called Upgraditis...that's when a person needs to upgrade to the latest and greatest and new and improved whatever that they just have to have on their bike. Sometimes I feel like I'm coming down with upgraditis but a then my wife gives me a good dose of "yougottapaythebillsandmortgageandbuygroceriestofeedthekids" and that fights it off.

I don't even ride very much, daily, including winter, but not much. Just wherever I'm going.
