Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Did you buy it as a frameset? On Specialized website complete bike has the fork like you have and frameset version has a flat crown fork? Do you know if that is just prototype pictures or it is actually possible to get one with the flat crown?
Could you post more pictures of your own?

Sorry for so many questions, but you've got me excited!
Bought just the frame set. They made a last minute change in spec. I liked the flat crown fork better myself and will try to source one here real soon.

the dropouts look similar to how yamaguchi shapes his now...

Got it free from work a while back. Originally it was a 12 speed. All i have done is

*Swapped the original rear wheel for a bolt on rear
*Changed the front cable housing & cable
*Changed the seat
*Removed the rear brake
*Added tail light and headlight aswell as computer to track my mileage

Not the prettiest bike on here obviously but i ride the heck out of it. Just put a new set of tires and freewheel on because the old used tires i put on gave out and the old freewheel clacked and popped when i pedaled. Planning to get clipless pedals eventually...
I run dual front chain rings 34/40 and the rear is 16 tooth. Seems low to most but for my city its a nice ratio for just getting around. Probably going to switch the front to 40/44 or 40/42. I'm just playing around with the gearing. I've lost track of how many times i have lengthened and shortened my chain....

Well, my first attempt at building a bicycle is finally rideable. It's not for me, it's for my girlfriend as a town bike, for training and possibly for use in sprint triathalons if they are flattish.

Got messed around a lot by various bike shops and it's been a learning journey but I finally had the first ride on it tonight. Never been on a fixie before and I was being extra cautious because I haven't got toeclip pedals for it yet.

What struck me straight away is how easy it is to pedal, very smooth and you feel like 100% of the the effort you're putting in is being transmitted straight to the road. Easy to ride dead slow up to junctions then power away again without having to stop.

I'm very pleased with the chainline. I've got it to within 0.5mm without a huge amount of effort or bodgery.

It'll need the bars and seat height setting up for her and I'm going to fit a new 700C wheel on the front to match the back one. Also a set of mudguards. I have some yellow bar tape for it but I've never fitted the stuff before so I've re-used some old stuff and I'll see if I did it right before putting that on.

The paintwork is a bit the worse for wear but both of us quite like it like that, might put a coat of clear laquer on it to keep the rust away.

Handily, The girlfriend just found a big (23") old raleigh frame dumped in the river near her with horizontal dropouts and buckled wheels. I'm going to stick a freewheel on the wheelset I removed from this one to make it into a SS bike for me. The slightly wider steel rims will suit me nicely because I'm a big bloke (6'1" and 230lbs). I've got enough parts left over from my tinkering so the only expense will be a bit of grease, some bearings and a freewheel.
