I've been mountain biking for a few years now and I have only had geared bikes up until this point. My best friend's car died and has been borrowing my Trek for some time now. I was left without a mountain bike had a frame and few drive train bits for a race bike I was developing. So this was built in a bit of a pinch. Still haven't installed the FSA bash guard yet because I am lazy... it is not really necessary here.
This is the only bike that I care to ride at this point. I have since sold my 4x bike, downhill bike, and other full suspension trail bikes.
Fast forward to this month and I have scraped together the last of my bike parts together and built this from an old supergo frame, Sunline V1 bars (for the width), Shimano mech brakes, Shimano LX Levers, XT/XC717 Wheels, brake cabling done courtesy of a pal who is a professional bike mechanic, stops like a champ.
I never really understood the single speed thing until these past few seasons. I am a complete convert now.

its true. the fork is kinda bent. what are the possible negative ramifications? in terms of handling it hasn't been an issue thus far. i've got so little money in this bike i could probably spring for a new fork but if its just an aesthetic issue i'll pass. thanks fer yer input fella's.

Finally got some spare money and motivation to convert my 1979 Motobecane Mirage to fixed for a winter/rain bike. Rides so much better now that it did with the 20 year old garbage bike bits. I just converted it tonight and took it for a spin around the bloc, still have to work out the chain tension, and for the winter I'm keeping both brakes and running just the flats.

That Mirage is a lot like a commuter bike I built. It was also a Mirage with Bleumels fenders. If you ever want to carry things, get a FRONT rack, not a rear rack. That bike likes front loads. When I carried stuff on the front, the handling actually improved.

Yup the Mirage is a great old commuter, digging it out of the shed is what got me back into cycling. When I first got it I was tempted to re-paint and clean it all up, but at that point I was too busy with school and had no money. Now I see it more as the bike's character, we've been through a lot together, including getting side swiped by an SUV, the bike did better than I.
And besides if I want to ride a nice shiny bike I'll bust out my recently built up 1985 Gitane Professional...
And no I'm never going to convert it to fixed.
Thanks for the kind words so far!
