Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

All on the road - various places

Very Close:
*Deer (too many times to count)
*Wild Boar (in Florida)
*Mountain Lion (Stalked me...while climbing Trail Ridge Rd)
*Bear (Chased me...good sprint)
*Gator (Jumped em!)

Hit:
*Squirrel (several)
*Dog (only mean ones )
*Snake (lots)
*Canadian Goose (hurts bad)

All time "favorite": A low flying cardinal - right into the front chainring. Was picking red feathers (and lot's o bird parts) out of the drive train for a while...

A buddy of mine killed a pigeon on the campus at the University of Illinois (Urbana). I almost hit a pigeon, but hit the brakes in time to give him time to fly off.

I was on a bike path at the U when a squirrel ran/jumped across the path from my right. He hit my front spokes and was thrown backwards off the front wheel. He landed on my jeans at the knee where he held on for a second, then jumped through the frame to the left to escape.

I was riding home from work on the diagonal sidewalk through a park when I saw two squirrels mating in the grass off to my right. Just as I reached my closest approach (they were about 5 feet off the walk), the female panicked and ran across the path directly under me. She cleared both wheels, but the male, who was being dragged along, was killed by the rear wheel. I felt really bad about it afterward.

Oh, and I was riding out in the country when two large dogs approached from the left at a full run, barking aggressively. I was approaching a 2-way stop, so I couldn't do a full out sprint. The dumber of the two dogs hit my rear wheel, shoving it about 6 inches to the right, but I managed to stay up and sprint away.

Bikes: 1999 Kona Kapu; late 70's/early 80's Araya road bike/commuter bike.

Yowza! *knock on wood* never with me, but friends for sure. A lady friend got hurt pretty badly when a squirrel committed hari kari and ran into her spokes. She was riding fixed, so all sorts of things went wrong.

That is a naaaaaasty photo though.
