I'm starting a new single speed bike build project that will include my making my own frame. However, until my DIY frame jig is completed I need to start on the wheels.

I'm going to build up the wheels using Mavic Open Pro rims, but the hub choice is not sorted out yet as I have a couple of things I want that I might not be able to have!

1 - would like 'matching' hubs (because it looks nice)
2 - would like a quick release front wheel (for occasional transport or locking up issues)

There are plenty of track/single speed/fixed hub sets that I could use, but none have QR fronts.

I could use a Dura Ace track rear and try to get a Dura Ace 7700 (closest match in looks). I could even look at the White Industries hub to get both 1 and 2, but this is waaay more expensive than I want it to be.

Any other suggestions? Or should I just suck it in and get hubs that either don't match or live without a QR front?

Could you get a matching set and replace the axle on the front?

Phil Wood or Paul both offer the option of QR on their front hubs.

I wasn't sure if this was possible for all hubs. Are axles standard enough that I could get a replacement for just about anything - even if that manufacturer doesn't make one?

Just make sure the front hub has a 9x1 axle (the great majority of hubs).

Bidding on some NIB Dura Ace 7400 track hubs now and watching some others...

Looks like the bike will be an all Dura Ace machine. Got the DA seatpost already, plenty of 7700 and 7800 brake sets around on ebay. Crank will be expensive though...

You can easily replace the axle of all hubs with a QR.

OP, why do you want QR so badly? You should be carrying a 15 with you anyways for your rear, and with the popularity of SSFG, your front wheel may be targeted more (despite the superiority of surrounding wheels, if any). I think you should save the ~$30 you'd spend on changing the axle out and put it toward another cog, or something of the like.

I couldn't find the hubs you're talking about on eBay (US). Are they flip-flop or just bear threading on one side? If I recall correctly, the older D/A hubs are strictly single-side threaded.
