They're double cranks. Sugino sells them with the Messenger chainring too. And as a bonus you get a chainline =/= 42mm. Smooth move from Sugino.

so to clarify something... you can run a single chainring on a double crank with NO PROBLEMS. all you need is shorter bolts and to not give a **** if someone cares that you have a tiny little lip sticking off the inside of your spider arms.

that said, if you are still taking affordable recommendations, i bought a set of shimano 105 (double) cranks off ebay, brand new, gloss black, for $40. i then bought a chainring for $15 and i've had no problems whatsoever. if you feel like you need to not have that lip on the back, then there are a lot of good recommendations in this thread, but beyond that little lip there is NO difference between a "track" crank and a "road" double. (144bcd excluded)

Hell, you could probably even run these:
ttp://cgi.ebay.com/Campagnolo-Veloce-170mm-Triple-Road-Bike-Crank-Arms_W0QQitemZ170321782560QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCycling_Parts_Accessories?hash=item170321782560&_trksid =p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=7
20 dollars is a pretty good deal for a campy crankset, provided you don't mind being stuck with a smaller selection of 135bcd rings.

i guess i misunderstood what double cranks were. i thought i was going to have to be running two cranks, like on a road bike, but only actually be using one of them. can you show me a picture of the lip you are referring to?

i had never heard a mention of chainline prior to now. i can see from the previous post what it is, but what is the significance of it?

I've been on the lookout via all the usual haunts, i.e., eBay and Craigslist, for a pair in black for months, no dice. It's kind of a drag, considering that the model is still listed on the SRAM website.
