Best riding music/songs
what are your favorite songs to jam on the headphones while you're riding? they can be songs about riding or songs that keep you pumped to ride. I'll start this off with a top 5. feel free to post more or fewer.
1) ride or die by doomriders
2) Blackened by Metallica
3) Get this right by Raised Fist
4) Bicycle race cover by Between the Buried and Me
5) Homewrecker by Converge
i'm a hardcore head........keeping it to 5 was harder than i thought. i will likely add more.

I ride in the street, so I'd pretty much have to be ******** to be listening to music. I like to know when a car is coming... why ditch a perfectly good and extremely effective sense.
If you're only riding on a bike path then it's a little less risky.

i live in the outskirts of grand rapids by the country and i can just sail along on paths and unpopulated streets. being a musician (and human), music compliments everything i do well and gives me a lot of motivation.

The assumptions that listening to headphones while riding a bicycle on or near the street, no matter how country, is unsafe and a bad idea? Yeah, you're right, I'm embarrassed.

I get the pedaling with the music thing, I would like to be able to do that on a bike path, but around here the bike paths have so many cyclists on them that I wouldn't feel safe there either. Bottom line, for me, I think it's unsafe to listen to headphones at any volume while riding on the street. These are the people that almost kill me when they fly off the sidewalk into the road on their wal-mart mountain bikes, ipod earphones dangling.

"No Brakes" by The Offspring
And who says you have to use headphones to listen to music on your bike?
Billy The Boombox, my 300W bike stereo trailer.
Billy is a custom trailer I built. He is made of fiberglass reinforced plywood w/ a polyester resin impregnated fleece "skin". It uses a car battery for power and an iPod as a head unit. Before the haters start whining about how bikes that blast music will piss off people- I built the trailer to be used for exhibition at group rides like Critical Mass, not just for cruising around town any time I ride someplace. Billy gained so much popularity here in town that he was invited to several city-sponsored bicycle rides as well. Billy turns heads and brings smiles wherever he goes.

You can keep the music volume down, and just not wear the "earbud" in the ear that's on the traffic side. Yes, I know that for most of us that's the left ear, but in other places it's the right!

Sunshine and Lollipops by Lesley Gore. Nothing can go wrong when "everything that's wonderful is sure to come your way."
In lieu of an Ipod machine and earbuds I modified some car speakers since riding with headphones is allegedly just like listening to music in a car with the windows rolled up (except my bicycle doesn't have any windows).

Sometimes I find myself repeating parts of songs over and over again in my head--last night it was part of the 50 states song (or whatever it's called). Too bad I don't even know how it goes.

Whatever's playing in my head, which ranges from Tool to Tchaikovsky. I don't bring my iPod along anymore since I started riding on bigger roads.

I listen to traffic.
Thinking about the pedestrians who walk right out into the street without looking who have their earbuds crammed in their ears makes me a bit worried about the cyclists who are riding in traffic who do the same.

Not sure if I would feel safe with earphones - but if I did listen to music while riding I would go with:
1. Toots and the Maytals - 5446
2. John Coltrane - Giant Steps
3. Philip Glass - anything from Glassworks
4. Mahavishnu Orchestra - anything from Birds of Fire
5. Propaghandi - Resisting Tyrannical Government
