The assumption is that the OP is riding on the street in the first place.

The trail I ride is full of people, even more so on warmer days and I ALWAYS have my iPod on full blast to ignore them. IMO, the only thing you have to watch out for is going to be ahead of you while riding trails. as long as you ride predictably and you check back often if you're gonna make a pass, what real danger is there to have sound with your workout?

+1 on the SHUFFLE btw.

Just killing time and thought I would click on this thread and surprise, surprise, only two posts in to hear from a real live moron.

Dude, you have not a clue. Sheesh.

Hay dipstick, you got eyes? Do you drive with your windows down in the car?

And besides you obnoxious safety nanny, if you aren't skilled enough to ride with music, leave the thread the hell alone for chirssake, you were not invited.

I use a shuffle.

But we have the same laws, are on the same roads, are looking for the same things and I ride a bike exactly like I drive a car, very well thank you. Besides, do you have any idea whatsoever what my riding situation is? Am I in heavy traffic? What kind of cans do I have on? Do they completely block my hearing or does that even matter if I can see everything around me.

Now let's return to the topic. If you don't listen to music, please go away now.

No. I'm glad you're awesome and can handle it, and I hope for your sake no one ever surprises you from behind. It's not that I don't trust me, it's that I don't trust everyone else... at all. If you're riding with open cans the wind must drive you crazy. I'm not saying that no-one can, or that no-one should, I'm just saying that IMO, there are a lot of people that a distraction in a situation like this is a horrible idea. My experience on the slopes leads me to believe that MANY people can't handle music while simultaneously being aware in a rapidly changing environment. As I said at the beginning of this... If you can, good for you, I hope you live a long, accident free life.

If I were to listen to music while riding.... hrm.

Ant - track one on the first melodies and memories release... 30 minutes of mixed up old school hip hop.

Daft Punk - Alive 2007 (The whole album)

Mastodon - Iron tusk

Atmosphere - Sunshine

David Bowie - Rebel Rebel

Naturally I'd never limit myself to 5.

Along with my helmet and gloves, my iPod and IEMs are gear I won't ride without. Over the past couple of days, I've been listening to Nuuro over and over (All Clear and The Reddest Ruby, which is freely available here). On the new album, Cotacachi! and Avila are pure bliss.

I listen to whatever matches the mood I'm in:
misty/foggy/night: grouper, eluvium, boy in static, whatever post-rock band I'm not tired of
wanna go fast: BT, melee beats, klaxons, music that goes OontzOontzOontzOontz in general.
sunshine: radio freetown podcasts, afro-pop
today: the unicorns, beirut

I use the headphones that clip on over your ears and don't have many issues hearing vehicles. You can put them on backwards (with the speaker pointing out) if you want more ambient noise, I do this when I'm camping alone and want to be able to hear creatures creepin' on me.

It may not be the safest thing, but listening to music while moving on a bike makes it so much more awesome.

Billy is a custom trailer I built. He is made of fiberglass reinforced plywood w/ a polyester resin impregnated fleece "skin". It uses a car battery for power and an iPod as a head unit. Before the haters start whining about how bikes that blast music will piss off people- I built the trailer to be used for exhibition at group rides like Critical Mass, not just for cruising around town any time I ride someplace. Billy gained so much popularity here in town that he was invited to several city-sponsored bicycle rides as well. Billy turns heads and brings smiles wherever he goes.

brilliant. spread the joy. also, if you irritate a few people along the way, that's not bad either. keep 'em thinkin and don't let life get stale.

daredevil,
I bow before your enormous wang. I'm sorry that you think "skill" will somehow make up for not being able to hear what's going on around you. Maybe like daredevil the superhero? Be careful out there, I hope you never have a problem because of the music.

Riding in a car and listening to music =/= riding on a bike and listening to music.

There's no logic behind it, first of all there's a difference between listening to music through car speakers at a reasonable level and through headphones designed to block out external noise.

Also if your driving a car and **** up because you're distracted you got 2000+ lbs of steel to protect you. On a bike you're ****ed.

Not worth it if you're on the road

I agree with not wearing headphones while riding. There is no way I'm as alert or focused if I'm listening to music and riding at the same time. Plus with all the whisper quiet cars/hybrids in the city it's sometimes impossible to hear them sneak up on you.

Riding in the city is inherently dangerous, and I need to be alert at all times, so music just ain't for me.

Either way, I enjoy hearing the city noises and the wind rushing past me as I ride. That's the only soundtrack I need. It's a good time to be in the moment.

I ride mostly on my campus so I enjoy listening to people, traffic, the wind, and just all the noises the city has to offer...however when I walk I have music playing at all times.
If I had the option of listening to music while riding it would be something along the lines of:
De La Soul - Ego Trippin
Smashing Pumpkins - Drown
Slum Village - Eyes Up (produced by J Dilla)
Brand Nubian - All For One
Tribe Called Quest - God Lives Through
Q-Tip - Get Your Wait up
Gift of Gab - Stardust
Grouch & Eligh - All In
Rodrigo Y Gabriela - PPA
The Roots - Rising Down

Just a few I pulled off of recently played on iTunes...I'm kind of a hip-hop head but I love everything. I could go on for days...check some of those out though!

Just thought I'd join the fray and explicitly say that I don't ride with headphones--it just doesn't strike me as a good idea.

If I did, though, I might listen to the Ramones or Andrew W.K. for intervals (if I actually trained).

Carlovahnsexron,

Ok listen, I was in a bad mood when I posted on this thread, sorry. I might add however that you are the one that started calling people names. My point remains, if you are relying on hearing to keep you safe instead of your eyes, you are in trouble. I don't need to hear what is coming from behind because I see them coming up well in advance every time.

May there be some situations where riding with music isn't wise? Absolutely. Just not my situation. Cheers!

btw... I am very skilled with my eyes. Some are not.

no headphones for me but i do like to listen to something at home before a ride or at work before the ride home which could include daft punk, interpol, four tet...mister scruff...birds chirping, noise going on during the ride

i have never ridden with headphones because it's one less thing to worry about and wear...i like to remain pretty minimal and aware when i ride

Eh, it's karma if he's going to be big-headed about it. It only takes one accident. My dad was pretty cocky about driving in the snow until one day we got unlucky and hit a patch of ice going 35 on a 45mph road, and rolled our Land Rover.

sure sure, but to imply that you would get some sort of matter-of-fact, itoldyouso, satisfaction from the notion that another rider was injured or worse killed is pretty dispicable.

also, this thread was intended as a discussion for those who do enjoy music while riding. if you don't like music or don't listen to it while you ride, more power to you. don't poop on others who do though.

i wonder if runners are as mean to eachother as bike riders?
