Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

hm well in that case I guess it could be nice but not necessary. I mean, on my road bike I can't imagine having downtube shifters b/c I will shift up to ten times in the span of a minute sometimes, so it's hadny to have them convenient.

With only 3 gears, I can't imagine how you could shift enough to make it worth it to have brifters.

What do you mean by "worth it?" That implies that brifters are a set back of some kind.

Note my use of the article 'a' implying that there are multiple standards and they should choose one of them

But which "standard" would they choose? Shimano 8, 9, or 10 speed? Shimano Nexus? SRAM Road? SRAM Mountain? Campy? One of their own?

They choose a particular cable pull design in order to maximize durability and functionality. I'd rather not sacrifice these things.

And regardless of all of this, even if they designed around a preexisting cable-pull length, you still wouldn't be able to "use whatever you wanted." You'd still be limited to that particular cable-pull length.

Yeah, and where is this "2010" that Sturmey mentions in that catalog? AFAIK it's still 2009 everywhere.

40 years ago we called that 'monkey gear'. I had some of my worst bike accidents when, during a hard standing effort, the hub would spontaneously shift into 'monkey gear'. I hated SA hubs with a passion.

I'll admit I'd like a brifter pretty much for vanity reasons only. I like how clean my bike is, don't want to add things on like a thumb shifter or bar end, although my computer is the exception. A brifter would be one less extra part bolted to the bars, plus I could shift without moving my hand from the bar.

So what's the latest word on availability for the S3X? It would make a great winter commuter rear wheel. Paired with a front dyno hub and some studded 32s.

All I know is I'm dyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyying here waiting.

My frame has braze-on cable stops for the f*$&ing thing

Soma Sparrow bars'll be here tomorrow... they fit bar-end shifters... Sturmey announced bar-ends for the hub.

You're killin' me here, Sturmey.

BTW, I wonder if it'll have the classic IGH "slipping while standing problem". We SS/FG are an aggressive riding bunch, that'd REALLY suck if we couldn't stand n' mash on this thing...

Oh, and :EDIT: I hate to be a negative Ned, but brifters are a terrible idea. Waaaaay too expensive, it'll drive up the whole price. Also completely unnecessary (even antithetical) for a 3-speed. I personally think they suck enough on a road bike. If looks are the driving force behind the brifter recommendation, what would you do with your left lever? It'd look odd being a non-brifter.
