I don't see what's UNcomfortable about riding in tight pants. Especially since most decent brands are like 2% spandex or something. You get all the room you need to move and pedal. But then again, people have been calling me a f4gg0t since like 2004 before that whole everyone saying and calling people "emo" thing came about and tight pants became cool for everyone and their mamas.

do you use this? http://www.dz-nuts.com/catalog/ ??
I wear lycra for my 14 mile commute: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1402/...eafd047a_o.jpg |
I wear levis 510s mostly and they rip up if you actually ride a good distance and do more than cruise at just above walking speed. Oh well though. they fit well, they actually feel better to ride with than some other jeans I have, and I don't feel like pulling up to the office (full of concrete construction workers) in lycra. I hear enough s*** about riding as is...
|
I don't have much of a problem with pain and tight jeans on a bike. I have resorted to sewing innertube material over ripped crotches though. Something I've learned to live with.
|
I recommend Levi's 510s. I think I posted this in a thread before. Anyhow, mine did eventually wear out, but they last by far longer than any other jeans I've ever owned.
As for uptucking, I find that incredibly uncomfortable ... |
i avoid riding more than a few blocks in jeans. i just dislike it.

How much sliding are you people doing in the saddle that you are tearing through pants? Do you ever wash them? Do you ever clean your saddle so that the dirt on it doesn't just get ground into your jeans/pants/shorts?
Check out http://outlier.cc/ pants and shorts. I just bought a pair of pants and their brand new shorts at a bike flea market in Brooklyn last week and they gave me a deal. I haven't worn them yet but all the reports I have heard are that they are really nice. Yeah, pricey, but if you guys are tearing through pants on a regular basis, it will be worth it. |

they still do wear/tear. Sewing an extra peice of shirt fabric or leather on the inside of the jeans does the trick for me. But I dont expect many guys to sit there and sew that. It's irritating.
how does an extra piece of fabric or leather on the inside help protect the outside of the jeans from wearing through? |

Good thing we're both in Seattle
On a related subject, I didnt have a working brake today, and went into a skid at a light, and as I was lifting myself back up on the the saddle, the saddle pulled back on a thin small hole on my jeans and ripped a huge crotch hole. But see,...these jeans DIDNT have the extra fabric. Ah ha |

I suppose because Im lacking external genitals riding in tight jeans isnt an issue, but they still do wear/tear. It's irritating. so did you lose your labia/clitoris in an industrial accident or were you circumcised in some african culture? ;) |

Clitorides (yeah, that really is an accepted plural) are hooded brosef
|
Well now hasn't this thread just derailed off topic.
Umm, try KR3WS. Most durable jeans I've ever owned and they're super comfortable. They make slim shorts now too. Or you could just rub Vaseline all over the area and your seat before you go out...:thumb::twitchy: |
I know a while back Seagull bags was offering a service where you could send in your jeans and they would sew a huge patch of bag material into the crotch and send them back for a moderate fee. although now they're doing a lot more business, so i dont know if that's still an option.
Also, if the jeans you're wearing are "raw" or "dry", they'll tend to wear down waaaay more quickly from the rigidity of the material and the constant creasing. i've ground through 2 pairs of awesome japanese selvage jeans from riding. they lasted about 5 months of biking, which is ridiculous considering without biking you could keep these jeans for the majority of your life. |
was that tucking question even needed to be asked? ummm common senses....much.
:popcorn my new E! :thumb: |
If you guys are that self conscious about wearing lycra, just wear it under some loose shorts. Sheesh.
|
thanks Saber.
buzzybelmondo, calm down there big guy. |
i like my pants like a cheap hotel: no ballroom.
|
Wait, I've never worn spandex before, are you really supposed to tuck up? Ugh!

Anyway, the jeans I was wearing had some holes in the crotch (not bicycle-related), and I stood up to climb this hill quickly, then sat back down and heard riiiiip. One of the holes caught on the nose of my saddle. D: I normally ride with my khaki shorts and cycling shorts if they are clean. Shorts are too comfy to NOT ride in. I ride in my shorts whether it is sunny or raining.

Oh man, I hate up tucking, it feels so uncomfortable ...
Aren't Diesel jeans a little expensive for bike riding? |
Yeah, I normally do not like up tucking, but you become used to it. If you shift it over to the side you prefer it to dangle on a little, it becomes more comfortable, instead of straight up.
And idk. I guess they are depending. When I do ride around in jeans, I ride in Earnest Sewns (which are the ones I ripped out more on my saddle in the story) and Diesels. The two pairs that I gave him were ones that I never wore, and I would prefer that they are being worn than sitting in my closet. /shrug My shorts I wear all the time are Ralph Lauren. I cruise in style. :D |
Iron on patches would probably work. They sort of melt into the denim don't they?
Lay your jeans flat, on their side, lift the waist and iron in the first half. Flip over the pants, then fold over the other half of the patch to do that side. You'd need to make sure you're putting it exactly where you sit, and you might trim a tiny bit of the excess on the sides of the folded corners of the patch. |
