Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Yeah...I kinda left out that small detail, huh? 700c.

I've been looking on eBay/Craigslist but the main problem is that I'm not sure what I'm looking at (and obviously don't want to ask for my wife's input)!

If you're using friction shifters, you can use pretty much anything back there. I picked up a pair of old dura-ace hubs laced to MA-40s for forty bucks, and they're treating me pretty well. Do you know if her bike is spaced at 126 or 130 in the back?

You can put any shimano splined 7 speed cassette on any shimano splined 7+ speed freehub body.
https://www.sheldonbrown.com/k7.html
scroll down to "road vs mountain hubs"

i'd just score this set off Velo Orange.

It's indexed and I believe it's 126 spacing...

Thanks for the suggestion, beeftech. Bookmarked!

Not gonna covert it, either. I've already got two fixed gears.

Also, one of these; https://www.jejamescycles.com/specifi.../2K7_STUFF.jpg

and one of these;https://farm3.static.flickr.com/2400/...2000f3.jpg?v=0. (Mine is a five speed).

I'll never understand the hate in this forum for other types of bikes. I love them all, well maybe not walmart bikes, but you know what I mean.

-Edit-

Does this count as a geared bike?

https://farm3.static.flickr.com/2050/...352d0afad9.jpg

It's got six.

I've got the same peugeot bike and i want to know what year and model are they?

So happy I found this thread. I'm looking for a geared bike, but really want something with a high bb and tight "geo" like a track bike. Something suited to short, fast sprints and tight turning rather than long distances like a traditional road bike. I don't even know where to start. Is there a certain class of frame that covers this? A criterium frame? Can anyone point me in a good direction to start my research? My budget is about $1000 - $1500, would consider new or used.

Yes, a criterium frame is what you describe. I'd go used, way more bang for the buck.

Google "criterium frame geometry" to get you started. Shorter chainstays, steeper headtube and seattube.

Check eBay for racing frames from the 80's. Columbus SL tubing or similar. Might get something like this for less than $150-$200. Italian bikes or those with Italian frame design (top tube and seat tube are the same length)

^^Thanks! Those are some beautiful-looking frames.

So you're saying vintage Italian-style road frames tend to have tighter than average geometry?

Kind of, every builder builds a bike differently though.
And every style of bike has a completely different geometry that each builder has a different take on.

A crit frame is what you described though. Some vintage (non pursuit) TT bikes might fit the bill too.
The vintage Cannondales that D1MF has posted are right up your ally.

adriano, do you know what company he is talking about when he says that he gets his frames from the same factory that makes frames for a "high-end French company"? Time? I have only ever seen neuvation wheels, but I'm kinda intrigued by this guy. Frame looks nicer than BD Immortal or LeChampion CF.

I'll try to post pics of my lovely '81 peugeot someday soon here. She's a beut and would make a sweet conversion but my 86 world sport fills that roll nicely.
