Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? a second bike...

i'm looking to get a second bike for fitness and short distance riding (about 30 miles). i have my eye on the capo for a single speed. for those of you that ride single speed is this the way to go or should i stick to my fixed gear or opt for a geared bike.

Bikes: 2010 Motobecane Team Track, 1997 GT Edge, 2012 Kilo TT Stripper

it all depends on what you want obviously. If you want an ss, you can put a freewheel cog on the reverse side of most hubs.

get a road bike w/ gears. You already have a single geared bike. If you are gonna coast anyways, might as well have gears.

Don't have two ss/fg's, it's pointless unless one is a bmx/mtb/cx. Get a road bike.

id drop the money on a f85 or f75 if you can boot. they have some killer deals right now clearing out the felts. you will want at least 105 level components on it, but those components willl save you money in the long run. i would buy lbs since they generally do tuneups for a year (if not more), and can take care of warranty crap easily should you have any issues

shimano feels good, but I'm a lover of the doubletap. and sram is rebuildable (i failed at rebuilding an old 105 shifter i got. now it's just a brake lever)

but not much comes stocked with rival or force.

but yeah, don't get another ss, drop coin on some gears. also keep an eye peeled as stores should be clearing out soon for 2010 stuff

Ah I need to update my sig. I actually sold the Fuji a little while ago and bought a Jamis Quest which I love. It's a steel road bike very similar to my Sputnik but w/ gears. It's nice b/c I switch b/w the two and can hardly tell I'm on a diff. bike other than the drivetrain.

The Fuji was an alright bike. Mine was a bit too small for me, though. Keep in mind they are measured c-t on the seat tube. Also, I had some problems w/ the BB/crank. Squeaking/creaking and the crankarm cam loose one time. Anyways, I think it's just as good as any other bike in that price range.

Also, check out bikesdirect. There is a Mercier steel bike w/ CF fork and 105 that would probably be nice.

Definitely go geared. I love SS/FG, but for longer rides geared is completely superior. besides, what's the point of having 2 of the same bikes? Maybe if you have like 10 bikes it would be cool to have a few FG bikes, but if you only have 2 you need to diversify

As an FYI, used bikes can get you a lot more for the money if you know how to buy used. My bianchi with Ultegra everything, new FSA stem/bars, Thomson seatpost, and other good bits was $900 in nearly new condition.
