How do you skid?

Hey, I'm new to Fixies and just started riding one yesterday. How do you skid?

Fugazi Dave 08-23-09 12:57 PM

I'm going to be that guy: use the search function.

You in the time you posted this thread you could have looked on youTube for "how to skid stop on a fixed gear."

JohnDThompson 08-23-09 01:15 PM

I don't. At least not intentionally. I find it preferable to spend $12 on brake pads every couple years rather than $30 on tires every few weeks.

TXBDan 08-23-09 01:49 PM

the prompted me to search youtube for some FG videos. which prompts the question, are any of the fixed gear videos on youtube actually fixed gears? every freaking vid is a freewheeling single speed.

Bob_Ross 08-23-09 01:49 PM

pull your left foot over the handle bars and put your right food behind your head and squint your eyes really hard.

Rhythm of Life 08-23-09 02:00 PM

Heres some sick fixed videos:

But on youtube I agree either its some weird crap from japan or its free-wheels or its some kids with horrible sense of cinematography.

Stop pedaling and put your jewels on the stem.

hairnet 08-23-09 10:07 PM

squeeze your rear brake

toosense 08-23-09 10:44 PM

pedal as fast as you can, then just stop pedaling.simple as that.

I want to know who goes through them that quickly, that's a pretty terrible way to ride if you need to change them that often.

deep_puddle 08-24-09 01:51 AM

if you are skidding to stop you shouldn't be riding without brakes. ( that is assuming you are brakeless.)
now skidding balls to the stem is what im talking about. i dont know the technical term for things, but if you watch mash, or macaframa, you can see that they dont skid to stop. they can basically stop their rear wheel from moving just sitting. learn how to do that.

jpdesjar 08-24-09 07:40 AM

Unweight your back wheel just a bit and lock up your pedals at the same time, pull up on the front pedal while pushing down on the back. Try this going slow on some loose sand or grass just to get the feel of it then gradually increase your speed.
It helps to lean over the bars too.

The first 0:12 will show you how.

Noobert 08-24-09 10:43 PM

I don't see how skidding is cool. To me i see it no different then if you used a brake to skid...Doesn't make sense.

Atol 08-24-09 10:49 PM

Skidding is lame. Go do some barspinzzzzzz

Chicagoan 08-24-09 11:39 PM

stick in your back spokes lol

Actually on rare occassions I use brake and skids to achieve a really short braking distance. Not really skids, it is simply gear lockup as I put a lot of weight on rear wheel so skid distance is less than 1 meter. In some rarest of rare occassions, I even put in a power slide. Not really professional or cool, but it is applicable for a noob like myself.

Coolness? For me, skid coolness comes from doing a semi-donut with it. I can only do a quarter donut though.

Ok, I have no problem with joking/sarcastic replies to noobie questions, but please don't write stuff that could actually get people hurt if by any chance they take you seriously.

Astronomical 08-25-09 11:04 AM

Slam on that front brake as hard as you can, or put your foot on the tire behind the fork.

Prime 08-25-09 01:10 PM

I dont get why people do the nuts to stem style skidding, to stop...

I like to slam my nuts on my rear wheel to skid.
