Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: Several, mostly not name brands.

I don't. At least not intentionally. I find it preferable to spend $12 on brake pads every couple years rather than $30 on tires every few weeks.

the prompted me to search youtube for some FG videos. which prompts the question, are any of the fixed gear videos on youtube actually fixed gears? every freaking vid is a freewheeling single speed.

pull your left foot over the handle bars and put your right food behind your head and squint your eyes really hard.

I want to know who goes through them that quickly, that's a pretty terrible way to ride if you need to change them that often.

Bikes: Bianchi Pista 08. Felt f80.

if you are skidding to stop you shouldn't be riding without brakes. ( that is assuming you are brakeless.)
now skidding balls to the stem is what im talking about. i dont know the technical term for things, but if you watch mash, or macaframa, you can see that they dont skid to stop. they can basically stop their rear wheel from moving just sitting. learn how to do that.

Unweight your back wheel just a bit and lock up your pedals at the same time, pull up on the front pedal while pushing down on the back. Try this going slow on some loose sand or grass just to get the feel of it then gradually increase your speed.
It helps to lean over the bars too.

Actually on rare occassions I use brake and skids to achieve a really short braking distance. Not really skids, it is simply gear lockup as I put a lot of weight on rear wheel so skid distance is less than 1 meter. In some rarest of rare occassions, I even put in a power slide. Not really professional or cool, but it is applicable for a noob like myself.

Coolness? For me, skid coolness comes from doing a semi-donut with it. I can only do a quarter donut though.

Ok, I have no problem with joking/sarcastic replies to noobie questions, but please don't write stuff that could actually get people hurt if by any chance they take you seriously.

Slam on that front brake as hard as you can, or put your foot on the tire behind the fork.
