I wear Swrve knickers. They look good, are slim so the pockets don't swing their contents around your thighs when you're riding, have back pockets deep enough to fit a mini-U lock, are reinforced in the right areas, comfortable and relatively cheap. I even got a pair of the water resistant ones, and they work really well in the rain. Knickers/shants seem like a pretty good compromise between fashion and function. I'm surprised I don't see more people wearing them.

Oh it can get pretty damn cold here. Not quite -30C. Good winter days its around -15C or so. But its always so windy. The street we live on has giant soviet built buildings and is like wind tunnel. Makes for fun commutes.

That's what I'm talking about. It's form meets function.

Aside from when you're riding for exercise or competition (when lycra is proper), why not just wear what cycle-commuters have been wearing over a hundred years: pant-leg straps. (They don't have to be the dorky reflective ones. They cost nothing and they readily fit in your pocket or can be wrapped around your seatpost when you don't need them. )
You can wear whatever pants you want, and you virtually eliminate the risk of getting your pants ripped up in the chain.

I go both ways. I swear raw cutoffs are more comfy, but the hemmed versions get you fewer weird looks in the civilized world.
It's handy there, quick to access for a fast lockup or alternative uses, and in no way impedes riding. It's practical.

You know, I really like the Knog lights, though. Whether it be MTB, FG, road or otherwise, I always throw them in my jersey back pocket if I'm going out late and the sun may be going down when I'm coming home.
But fork mounting them does nothing.

Alternative uses = cracking walnuts and pecans
In no way impedes riding = you are not in a position to tell me this isn't true. Doesn't bother me one bit and is not in the way. Ever.
EDIT: Also, Brazil nuts.
