It may not be an option for you, but an air compressor has never failed for me. Makes installation and removal super easy and you don't have to wait for alcohol to dry

It sounds wack, but WD40 always works perfectly. For real. Just a little spray on your bars, slide the grip on, let sit for a few minutes and they'll be on there like they're glued.
You wouldn't think a lubricant would be good for holding grips on but it's got something to do with the way WD40 reacts to rubber (or something) that makes it sticky.

"like dissolves like" is actually mnemonic device from Chem / Org-Chem when discussing polar and non-polar compounds. Point is WD-40 and the grips are both polar compounds so the WD-40 is going to dissolve part (just the surface layer) of it, mix with it and turn into a new hydro-carbon "goop", likely to be sticky. I wasn't meaning to imply that WD-40 would dissolve the entire grip... well, it would if you soaked it in a bucket of WD-40, I'd guess... I was more explaining (admittedly, obliquely) the reaction (you're right it does react) you've observed.
