New To Fixies

Hi everyone,

New to fixies, just got this as my new toy.

I'm debating on whether or not I should put a front brake on it. I live in an area with a lot of rolling hills and I already had a few close calls.

Let me know what you think and if there are any other improvements I can make.

Umm, where are your straps?

Sixty Fiver 09-19-09 11:21 PM

Nice bike.

Get a brake so you live long enough to learn to ride that bike.

And some foot retention.

alexgate 09-19-09 11:22 PM

your bike will look cooler with out a brake.

tmh657 09-19-09 11:33 PM

Is that seat post for looks or is it so the bike will fit you? If it's for the fit then your frame size might be a bit off.
White chain = fashion and dirt collector. Sweet frame BTY...My 2¢ worth.

spcialzdspksman 09-19-09 11:52 PM

OMG, f*ck you!! Where'd you get the dough for that?!

haha, jk but +1 on foot retention and front brake though, you'll probably thank your brakes when they save your life
and do you really need that big of a setback on your seatpost? seems odd to me, you must really not fit the frame well?

eclipse2 09-19-09 11:57 PM

Thanks for the input!

Straps are on the way... and the seat is an actual time trial saddle, I really like the fit.

Any riding tips?

z415 09-19-09 11:59 PM

You are new to fixed gears and you are riding that?!?!?!

Have fun.

Use a front brake, especially riding the rollers.

murdaki11 09-20-09 12:12 AM

very nice first bike...

Golden3ye 09-20-09 12:38 AM

that is an awesome seat, is that stock?

**** you.

Fixed.

Seriously get some foot retention and a brake.

eclipse2 09-20-09 12:56 AM

I picked the seat out, fizik Ares... and it's still a work in progress. I just picked it up today :).

I'm getting the straps in a few days and the front brake I'm definitely going to put on.

c0urt 09-20-09 01:00 AM

brakes, but it is a really really nice bike.

seau grateau 09-20-09 01:01 AM

I hope you have a garage or a damn good lock. I wouldn't want to ride that bike on the street in my city, much less lock it up anywhere out of sight.

toosense 09-20-09 01:30 AM

lovin the bike, except for the obvious. i am dissapointed that you put a 130bcd crank on that frame/wheelset. it would be a beaut with some 144bcd

Yeah, OP cheaped out on the most important part of that build. Drivetrain. $2 chain heh.

alexgate 09-20-09 01:49 AM

Is that a cobra wing base bar?

What type of crank would you recommend? I went with the 130 for easier stopping since I originally didn't want any brakes. Now I'm putting on a front brake I might look into other cranks. I have a 16T cog with the 44T in the front. Do you recommend any other combinations?

Also, do you recommend a specific brand of chains? The white KMC chain was just a temporary fix while I shopped around.

alexgate 09-20-09 01:56 AM

Do you just have no budget?

oldfixguy 09-20-09 03:14 AM

eclipse2,

Very, very nice. Do the front brake thing. Do the foot retention thing. Ignore the nit-pickers and enjoy the hell out of that beauty. :thumb:
