Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

If a thief only has access to prying tools and your lock can be pried open with a crowbar, the thief will take it. If it can't, and those are the only tools a thief has, your bike is safe from him.

If a thief has access to a drill and your lock can be defeated with a drill, he will take your bike. If your lock cannot be defeated by a pry bar or a drill, your bike is safe.

If a thief has access to a bottle jack and a jack can be used to open your lock, the thief will get your bike. If your lock cannot be defeated by a pry bar, a drill or a bottle jack, your bike is safe.

This is not complicated stuff, and anyone who actually thinks instead of repeating half baked forum memes should know this. The most sophisticated thieves can defeat any lock, but to imply that because the most sophisticated thieves can break your lock, anyone can break your lock, and therefore a better lock offers no additional protection is absolutely moronic
I'm willing to bet there's 3 kinds of thieves, those that will steal a bike that's not locked up, those that will cut through a cable lock, and those that are going to break through a U-lock. I'm willing to bet that most thieves aren't going to waste time on a Ulock for BD bike when they could cut through a cable lock on a bike right next to it. I also find it extremely unlikely that someone is going to break through a Ulock in broad daylight outside of entrance ways, which is 95% of the time that my bike is locked up. For me it doesn't make sense to spend over 50$ for a lock. If my bike was worth over 700$ or if I had to park my bike outside over night maybe I would upgrade, but I really don't think it's going to make a difference 95% of the time.

All these assumptions aside, I don't really know if there's any statistics out there to prove or disprove my assertions of how thieves work.
