No offense, Alex, however I think when someone asks about Kryptonite locks they usually won't make a substitution. If they are willing to pay the price for a Kryptonite lock, that means they are looking for the ultimate quality that comes with the name..

Again, no offense, I'm sure you're set up works great, but he/she might be in the kind of situation where that brand might be the right choice.

But I digress..

Bikes: '9? SS Schwinn Frontier

this statement is false. newer kryptonites use flat keys now.

That is what I think too. I just did not want to get into a petty argument. I'll normally sheldon lock. Lock my other wheel to the frame. Then string through seat and wrap around the pole or what ever agian to keep it sturdy.

if you do not use a mini expect your bike to be stolen very soon. Unless you live in a small town

Not sure I agree with this. If you can break one lock, you can just as easily break two.

A bull dog mini is not a *** lock. Kryptonite is all marketing. Yes a kryptonite new york will hold up against an angle grinder for 30 secs more, but my second u lock will give it another couple minutes beyond that. A bottom of the line kryptonite is going to be equivalent to a mid to top range bull dog. The bull dog will be slightly cheaper too. If you can show me I am wrong I'll go out and buy some kryptonites and give my bull dogs away on here.

-edit I have a brute mini and pitbull mini with a a cable. Not a bulldog paid about 60 all together

Sorry what? Where did I even make a comparison of U lock brands?

I simply said that if a thief has the ability to break the strongest U lock you have on your bike, it isn't going to be any trouble for him to break the other lock you've used to lock up as well. Nobody hack saws a U lock, if they have a bottle jack or an angle grinder to break one of your locks, they can just as easily break six of your locks as well.

If you follow the order of the thread that original quote was a response to you can buy two onguards for the price of one kryptonite. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

No I realize that, but brand name besides the point, I don't think your bike is any safer with two U locks than one.

I use multimple locks to lock up multiple points. My wheels are a lot safer having two locks rather then 1.

Locks are not to make your bike safe, but to deter bike thieves.

Exactly, if someone wants to get through your locks they will. I'm not going to waste money on a more expensive U-lock when the main point is for deterrence in the first place. I don't leave my bike locked outside when it's dark very often and rarely have it locked out in public for more than an hour at a time.

You guys have been repeating entirely too much forum memes without actually thinking it through. The notion that "if someone wants your bike, they'll get it" is nearly as stupid as the notion that a better built lock does not offer any more protection than a cheap one.

If a thief only has access to prying tools and your lock can be pried open with a crowbar, the thief will take it. If it can't, and those are the only tools a thief has, your bike is safe from him.

If a thief has access to a drill and your lock can be defeated with a drill, he will take your bike. If your lock cannot be defeated by a pry bar or a drill, your bike is safe.

If a thief has access to a bottle jack and a jack can be used to open your lock, the thief will get your bike. If your lock cannot be defeated by a pry bar, a drill or a bottle jack, your bike is safe.

This is not complicated stuff, and anyone who actually thinks instead of repeating half baked forum memes should know this. The most sophisticated thieves can defeat any lock, but to imply that because the most sophisticated thieves can break your lock, anyone can break your lock, and therefore a better lock offers no additional protection is absolutely moronic

you have to be aware of WHAT you're locking to, also. i can't count the number of times i've seen someone with a beefy ass u-lock locked to a single link of a chain link fence.

beyond ********.

Weren't these the lines that Ricardo Montalban used to intone in his inimicable way in the ads he did for Kryptonite back in the late 70's?
