Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bingo. I also run aerobars on many of my bikes. They give you a free 1-1.5mph given the same power input. A TT or Tri bike is not required to run Aerobars. I run in my aerobars on most straights on my commute which is basically a race for me to make my trains.

Drops will put your upper body in about the same postion as most aerobars, but it will keep your upper body open and force you to use your arm muscles to maintain an aero postion (keeping your elbows locked in the drops is neither aero nor good form)

Aerobars allow your upper body to relax, you to gain another postion, and you to go faster for free.

Most aerobars add about 1lb to your bike. The ones I run add about 200 grams.... if you want ultimate performance you have to spend quite a bit.

Remember also that if your are doing a century in an organized ride.... its not cool to draft other cyclist in your aerobars, nor do they want you swerving all over the place becuase you just got them. Practice on your own before you do an organized ride.

My SS w/ aerobars:

dude, screw the hipsters, i would get aero bars for my bike, thats freaking awesome, especially if you have a 100 dollar giftcard to performance, unless u need parts for your bike...if your done getting stuff for your bike, why not, u have 100 bucks on a gift card. if u do, ill hold onto the card, riding in drops is pretty comfortable lol

so far i've bought a helmet with the gift card for $30. the Giro Transfer. it's required for the event, and cycling friends have been trying to convince me to purchase one for months. still debating the idea of aero bars... i definitely want to get them for my bike, but as far as the event goes; me and my friend make contests out of everything. so if i ride with an aero set up and he does not, he automatically wins! that's no fun! i'll most likely hold onto the remaining balance and put it towards some kind of aero setup after next weekend.
