Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

"Quicksilver" fixie: Anybody have the specs on it?

Saw "Quicksilver" with Kevin Bacon in the classic section of the video store, and I (now) recognized that fixed gear. Anybody know what kind of frame that ride was, and the gear ratio he was pulling? Did Kevin Bacon really do all the riding, or was he only in the close-ups?

Bikes: TBL Onyx Pro(ss converted), Pake SS (starting to look kinda pimped)

from the wikisphere:

Bikes

Although a variety of bicycles are used in the movie, 1984-85 Raleigh USA roadbikes[1] are used throughout by notable players in the movie.

Kevin Bacon's bicycle is a singlespeeded '84 Raleigh Competition. While no differentiation is made in the film, at least three different configurations are seen on Bacon's bike during the movie: Fixed-gear, singlespeed, and outfitted with 0-degree trick forks during various scenes in Bacon's apartment. A possible freewheel is suggested early in the film when Bacon dismounts while in motion and a distinct clicking sound is heard until the bike stops moving.

A 1984/5 Raleigh Grand Prix is used for the opening chase sequence, and a 1984 or '85 Super Course makes a brief appearance in the opening credits.

As said, not an official track bike, you can tell with the braze-ons and cable guides.

Also, first scene montage of the bike, then him riding his bike, it appears both fixed and freewheeled. First shot of it in the shop is as fixed, then it appears fixed up until he's drinking the coffee. When the cab cuts him off, he coasts while correcting his route. Don't have to rely on the clicking sound.

Arent sounds usually added later in movies? Thought most hollywood movies shoot the scene first and add sounds later. If thats the case, you cant go with the clicking sound. Must use visual clues. Not saying anyone is wrong as I believe we all agree, they used both free wheel and fixed in this movies. Sometimes switching off mid-scene, on same looking bike.

Too bad the plot sucked. Should have been so much better. Still very relevant today. Stock broker turned courier in living in a loft in industrial part of NYC riding around in single speed bike. Id let Soderbergh or Fincher direct a remake.
