If St Louis Had Bike Messengers I would do it this winter for the exercise, excitement, and biking experience...after working 9 years in a Warehouse in different roles...Messaging would be a great change of pace! Just sayin.

I was a messenger for 10 months in NYC because the economy was **** and I had trouble getting a job. I have a bike (FG w/brake and I wore a helmet if it matters) and I decided to give it a shot, and to tell you the truth, it was the most fun I have ever had doing a job...you really have to bust your ass if you want to make money, and even then it isn't much. But I made it work, living with my fiancee in a nice Brooklyn apartment. It is true that being a messenger does not promise much of a career...however, the owner of my former company used to be a messenger in his 20s, then he broke off and started his own company...he then built his business and ended up acquiring other messenger businesses in NYC....now, he is a ****ing millionaire, if you can believe that. Bottom line is that you can make money doing whatever you want, just gotta do it right and commit. So shove it right up your ass you greedy ****, I'm not a damn loser because I was a messenger, and actually am doing quite well now in advertising....I literally hope you lose all your money and family and die hungry and alone...you deserve it.

From what I understand, the percentage of messengers that ride brakeless track bikes is actually pretty small. It's just that they're the most hipster-y so people started doing that. Most messengers ride way more practical bikes, but practical != cool.
Also, the_don is totally being a dick.

On an important side note, I got down to two degrees from Kevin last summer.
I met someone who claimed the Bacons as family friends.
But now I've forgotten who it was, so I'm back to six.

I think I was trying to get across the point of "the career potential of being a messenger is not very good."
I ain't an investment banker, I don't make a load of cash at the moment and I work hard, but I know that if I keep at it I will get more money in the future and hopefully earn enough to buy an apartment and have a family. I am sure there are stories of people who set up their own messenger company and made a lot of cash, congratulations. But that isn't really typical lifestory story of the job and he is clearly not a loser. I must add that in many areas, you find losers who never seek to improve themselves and are content to just get by, drinking and partying and not thinking of the future.
For the record, I have nothing against messengers and if i was younger, at uni or looking for my first career job I would probably love to work for a while, getting to ride and earn a bit of cash. I don't think messengers are losers, but it is more of a side job. If the said messenger was like 40 something and earning just enough to get by to feed and pay for the family, then I would say that is a loser.
Maybe the reason I came across a bit strongly was because there are a few people who post things like "I want to move to the city to become and messenger". I don't know if they plan to do it as a career. Does anyone think that? I don't know. I just wanted to get the message out that if you spend 5 years doing it, then you don't have much employ-ability at the end of it, unless you have moved into the office and are managing the biz or something.

You do realize this is "Singlespeed and Fixed Gear". It's all about fad and fashion. So what's your point?

IMO. I would guess that makes artists, social workers, writers, musicians, professional cyclists and the like "losers" as well, and the 45 year old accountant who hates his job, takes medications for his blood pressure, his obesity, his stress and a bit of xanax just tot ake the edge off being alive is a "winner".
I think your priorities suck. Anyone who can say without reservations that they get a lot of satisfaction from their life rather than having to say "... but it's stable" or "... but it pays the bills" is better off than some consumer drone working a "respectable" job that they hate.

That describes me, almost exactly. Mid 40s I take pills for just about everything, abuse others, both natural and synthetic. I have 2 kids, big ass mortgage, 3 car payments, 1 boat payment, ****load of credit card debt. I have been trying to fill the emptiness with material possessions, electric guitars, motorcycles, guns etc, and I am still a looser.
When I was a kid the only thing I wanted to be when I grew up was to be carpenter. My parents said hell no, you are going to college, where I barely opened a book, but did graduate, got an office job, and now all I do is sit in a cubicle and sexually harass the women all day. And with this economy being in the toilet, none of the baby boomers are retiring, so any chance of career advancement has been put on hold.
So if you are still young, and enjoy your work, don?t change to meet anyone else?s expectations.

^^^ We NEED younger people to take up trades. They've been vilified by so many generations of parents' that the only remaining trades people in so many industries are all older men.^^^

It's good to know you've lowered yourself to the same level of the person you're complaining about.

The mantra for the new millennium should be to fill your heart before your bank account. Passion keeps life going, chasing the buck (unless that's your passion) is at times downright harmful.

I did that for a while. But the people I dealt with were jerks, and the easy money ran out. Left me rather disheartened.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Our city's top bike messenger has family, a nice home, and makes 60k a year.
I had to retire from the job due to an unrelated injury... I worked for a good company and was making good money (Canada differs from the US on this) and if I was still out there I'd be pulling down 40k a year and be the lead biker for the company.
Those who say the job requires no skills or is just for losers can kiss my ass.
Most of you wouldn't last a week before you either became road kill or found yourself curled up in a corner rocking back and forth.
I have a lot of respect for the guys who do this and most here (I know them all) have been doing it for a very long time.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
I've never been a bike messenger nor have I played one on the Internet. I'm a SS/FG devotee, but I really don't understand why anyone who makes their living riding a bike in city traffic all day would want to do it on a brakeless fixed gear. If I were doing this daily, I would probably use a fixed gear too, but with both front and rear brakes. I would gear the bike on the low end. This would give max control of the bike (if you are skidding you ain't stopping), and not put so much wear and tear on your knees. I'm coming at this as a geezer who has been riding a bike for 61 years. I was off the bike from '92-'98 with palellar tendonitis. That weren't no fun, boys.
As messengers here are covered by worker's compensation running without a brake could affect their benefits if they went down while on the job... I always run a brake(s) on my fg bikes and people would expect no less from a brake nazi like myself.
