Choosing handlebar width

What does one need to consider when choosing handlebar width? 40, 42, or 44mm?

I prefer narrower bars on quick handling bikes, and wider bars on slower handling bikes.

I have to go with shoulder width. I was first riding with a 32cm bar, I now use 44cm, on my fixie whip and it was giving me back pain
