i'm 2 months into a new area of law, just digesting deposition transcripts now. barely getting any billing, everything takes me forever, so it's not like i have stacks of work to complete. the whole transition period is weird, makes me miss my job at the DA's office that I was good at and knew the ropes. If I can avoid it, i'm not going to sit in a chair 8 hours a day and watch my legs atrophy...so here's trying.

alright, well this experiment was a success. hour ride on the fixie, kept it slow, didn't get sweaty. suit pants are form-fitting (very straight-leg) so i didn't have to bother with a leg strap.

im wearing some cap-toe shoes, which shows you how much of a poor decision maker i am - teh coal hanz are a little scratched up from the metal clips. they also have more room in the toe than they should. from this point forward maybe i'll rock some sneaks.

all-in-all, this was *great*. can't wait for tomorrow. maybe i can get a few other of these law-types into it.

or i could drop a few hundred on these:

This thread is awesome, although I'm not too sure I'd be willing to sacrifice my nice suits on my greasy chainring, or the crotch on my beat ass turbo for that matter.

We all see what happens to our jeans after a few hundred miles. You sir, however, have my approval.

i could swap out the pantaloons for some shorts. so dress shirt, tie loosened, gym shorts, pasty white legs, dress socks, sneakers. i'm sure many will follow my lead
try a suit with straight-leg pants. this suit (which, i realize, you cannot see) has similar tailoring to the more relaxed outlier pants. never touched the chainring.

Haha I remember this, good work I'm glad you ended up really pulling through with this. I like the suit thing, even if that means going out and buying a crappy cheap suit just for riding bike then do it. Doing anything athletic in a full suit is A+ in my book. Did you ever see that video of those two guys in suits bombing hills in SoCal on longboards? Epic. And sorry bout your kole hannnzzz but you should've seen that one coming.

You should invest in some of these instead:

yea, ain't no thang. the shoes have a scratch or two but it'll buff out. totally worth it to get out there today. i like those bontragers, it looks like most of these "could pass for non-cycling" shoes are SPD; honestly i'm not interested in having two different clipless types. i'll figure something out. i'm fine with a set of thin-sole sneakers. onitsuka tigers or something.

today i brought sneakers.

I had an idea for the hotter months: what do you think of wearing Nike Pro Compression Shorts & a Nike Dri-Fit shirt, with a pair of gym shorts for a ride? the point is, i can wear that stuff under my suit (secret cyclist, woooo) and quickly switch into and out of it at lunch.

Hahaha, you are such a dork! (I mean this in the familiar friendly way, not condescendingly).

Measure twice and cut once. Compression shorts are not cycling shorts. Get some cycling shorts (bib shorts) and just change in the bathroom/locker room like everyone else that jogs/rides/hoops during lunch. Or get some baggy MTB cargo shorts. They have padding, too.

I disagree, I love the Clark Kent/Superman persona Inertianinja is after. Go the full 9 yards my friend

today, day 2, was pretty cool. left the tie on, so there was a little bit of it waving in the wind (so awesome, i know)
when i pedaled back into the office parking lot a guy came up to me and asked me if my bike was a fixie, that he rides a steamroller, and he never sees FG's on long island. i told him to bring his in and we'd ride.

The best was that Birdhouse (the end) movie when they skated in suits! on fire... but that was like 1998.....

Welcome to Tokyo, You never have enough time to take a ride during lunch. You can ride at 8am on the way to work, or 10pm on the way home. Weekends are for catching up on sleep, so good luck there!

And that is if you are lucky. sometimes i don't finish till 2am

I would love to do this but city streets are too hectic and my dress pants are tight. Plus I'd hate to come back to the office with sweat stains on my ass.

Riding at lunch is totally worth it. I work long days and commute, so I can't get a ride in during the week. Too early/dark in the morning, too dark when I get home. I find that getting a ride in at lunch a couple days a week makes a significant difference in my mood the rest of the time. Plus, I want to get in shape for track season, and you just can't get in the kind of shape I want to get into doing whatever it is you do only on the weekends.

I've brought a change of clothes to ride in. The hard part is changing back in the bathroom. I brought a little mat to stand on last time (as opposed to standing on my shoes with bare feet while changing pants and undies and whatnot).

Totally worth it, especially if you can't ride as much as you'd like.
