Newbie needs help with axle question.

Is it a big deal to convert a fixed front axle arrangement (has hex nuts now) to a quick release ("skewer") axle?

The rims are "AlexRims R500." I'm just wondering if there would be anything special about this, I mean, I wouldn't need to replace the hub as well, would I?

Thanks for any help. Never had a hub apart before.

Michael

quick release axles are hollow, to accept the quick release lever. Track axles are solid and use axle nuts to secure. So, if you really want quick release, either buy an appropriate axle and swap it out, or buy another front wheel with quick release and use that. Personally, I prefer axle nuts, it takes me only a few seconds more to mount or remove my front wheel using a hex wrench vs quick release, plus there is less chance of front wheel theft. And I have to carry the hex wrench anyway to service my rear wheel if I get a flat.

OK, so then what you're saying is that the hubs are pretty standard and can accept either the solid "track" axle, or a hollow "quick release" axle, right? I'll probably just swap the axles, because it would be a lot cheaper than a new wheel. The wheels are real nice.

Thanks.

You may want to let a LBS do the swap for you, as it involves some disassembly/reassembly/adjustment.

Cool. Hey, I see you have some older bikes. That is what got me interested in this whole thing. I found an old 1979 Zebrakenko storm that had been ridden very little. Got her some new tires and service at LBS - real nice ride. (Changed some stuff like the seat.) The new bike is an Americano I got at Performance for quick fitness rides. The quick release option would be for that.

Haven't posted any pix yet, but may try later.

If you want to find out more about your Zebrakenko, post up pics of it in the classic and vintage section of this site. Cool old bike pics are always appreciated over there.
