I'd love to do a One-by build using an internally geared hub.

No way, if I'm going that far I'm going all the way.
Triple crank, 11 speed cassette, 14 speed IGH.
AYHSM 462 gear ratios

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
An IGH does not qualify as a one by... although they can be damn sweet.
Clean lines and a few more speeds tucked away out back...

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Functionally... an IGH and 1by work the same way as all the shifting is done in the rear although some IGH equipped bikes also use dual drives where a cassette and derailleur are also part of the package... basically a 1by with an IGH.

A couple weeks ago I saw one of the messengers around town using a sweet new setup so I had to ask him about it.
Basically it is like a track bike but instead of a fixed hub it has a freewheel, and instead of a single cog it has a big cassette in the back, and it uses a chain tensioner, but you can use a cable to move the chain tensioner around and put the chain on different cogs, and then on the cranks there are two chainrings and another derailleur thing.
So I decided to build one up, they are so zen.

Nice photoshop job on the "super multicog bike".

I thought I could make it believable by just adding a bunch of complicated-looking machinery back around the rear hub (I have no idea what that thing would be supposed to do, if it were even real), but Carleton saw right through me

This started life as a belt drive singlespeed (pic without fenders), and I built an Alfine-8 rear wheel for it and it is a fantastic commuter. I can pull the fenders and rack off, throw on some 35's and it makes a fun trail bike.
I just did a flat bar swap and prefer the position to the drops on this particular frame - it has a HUGE "front center" dimemension , and works better as a flat bar bike.
As a Singlespeed - you can really see the disproportionately long front triangle, hence my recent change to a flat bar
Alfine 8 Speed detail
Gone but not forgotten, my old Tommasini: Yes, that is ALOT of seatpost - I used to race with a 7-10 inch drop to the bars, and it suited me really well. I doubt I'd be comfortable that way now.
