Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: 82 Bianchi ECO Pista, Pake, Kilo TT, some *** bmx i found underneath an old house

if you don't need to take much stuff with you, see if you can get what you do need to fit in a saddle bag/fanny pack. the second I ditched the stuff I didn't really need for work, i found i could cram what I did need in a fanny pack (and water bottle holder, for my thermos). feels really good to not have any extra weight on my back or the bike.

I'd like to do it on my FG bike as that's the one I most enjoy riding and I'd be particularly interested to hear if anybody commutes in Tokyo. Cheers.
Remember you gotta 8 hour work-day on top of it. Plus, "socializing" after work which happens to be a major part of WORK. ... I would keep it 1-2 times a week. Bump up as you wish. Or you can get a foldable bike so you can ride only one way or something. (as a rule, train folks won't let you ride if your bike isn't in a bag.)

Finally took the plunge and started commuting today. 6.5 miles each way. Lesson for tomorrow: bring an extra shirt, it was WARM this morning.
