Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Speaking as someone who owns this stem, I can report it that it is a total peice of **** beyond looking totally rad, the clamp design is so poor it barley functions as a stem.

grease the bolts.
scuff the inside of the stem where the fork steerer tube contacts it.
don't over-torque, it can cause the stem to break.

on my way home from mtbing this afternoon i stopped at a shop to look at parts for my new fg build & they had 1 of these cinelli alter stems in their odd parts box.
it looked like it had never been sold, just continually marked down, finally to $50.
it's no good for the bike i am working on but did i mess-up by not buying it to just keep around?

What was the condition of the stem? New old stock? With or without shop wear?

You do realize that if it is an Alter stem that it requires a rare 1" threadless track fork. All City is probably the only one available.

it was in excellent shape, almost as new but for a couple lil marks from banging around in the parts box.

yeah, i saw it was for a weird steer tube. that's a big part of the reason i left it behind, probably for the best.

Keep an eye on it; if it gets marked down again... you can always flip it on ebay for profit.

I already have one from my chrome pista days of long, long ago; I was just helping the guy out. You also forgot the much too common kilo tt.

SRSLY?

Affinity Lo-Pro is also 1" threadless. So is my father's Marin San Marino, which has a Cinelli Sesamo:

You can bet your tiemeyer on it.
Only the WT does not follow this however.

I wouldn't bet my Tiemeyer on anything that comes from BikesDirect. There's no telling what you guys get out of the box as evident by this thread started yesterday in the track forum: https://www.bikeforums.net/showthread...-32-quot-gears

Wait so there's a random chance that you might get a tiemeyer from BD?

But seriously BD is oof. Would not do business with EVER; never have, never will.

I think that cyborg/matrix stem is hideous.

On the other hand, I can't wait for the D'Italia 64 and 1a stem. I own a few now and i want MOAR. Please let them be reasonably priced...

I want the Alter stem strictly for the pin up insert.

They're called alter girls. And I have the entire set back home with doubles. They didn't sell that well and I ended up getting the rest of the set when they were on clearance at my LBS.
