Hed 3 question

Hey guys/gals

Please put the hipster, yuppie, stuff aside for one sec.

I've got a chance to pic up a like new rear Hed 3, carbon track wheel for a really good price.
Other than really liking how they look. Is it feasible to ride it around the city?
What are the advantages/disadvantages of the wheel?
I see most people, actual ive never seen anyone, other than in pics, riding with hed's in the back vs the front. Mostly in front.

Like I said. I've got a chance to pick it up really cheap. 350 bucks, without locking.

Help me out.

Thanks

do it. As long as it's a clincher, there aren't too many disadvantages. Just don't jump off any curbs or anything and you'll be fine.

For $350 you could build a really nice conventional wheelset.

Just make sure that it has track threading, there's a post about an older HED3 with a freewheel threading, ran into many problems trying to use it as fixed wheel. Also the wheel can be used as front or back.

Yeap. It has a track threading. I've seen it on a track bike. It's like new. I don't think I should run into any probs.
I'm just a little hesitant to run carbon. All ive ever used is philwood, deep v setups.
I was just a little misunderstood because everyone runs them on front. So I was thinking maybe there was a reason no one runs rear.....

I'd be a little hesitant about buying any sort of used carbon fibre components.

i have seen that wheel on our CL. I don't think you need to be overly cautious about buying used CF parts. CF isn't as fragile as most FG people make it out to be. Honestly, it would probably be fine even if you did jump off curbs. But just to be safe, I would avoid any sort of high impact scenarios

Yeap. My gf is chipping in. It looks real clean. And from what I understand that's one of the "stronger" CF wheels?

Yea. I've been stalking that listing for a while. And I think my gf got tired of me looking at it.....

It's just a lot to pull the trigger on.

Oh, track ones can not be converted to a front, now I know.

350 is still a lot, glad you are taking your time thinking over it.

So are you going to ride this without a lockring on the streets?

No. I have tons of lockrings sitting around. If they don't fit I'll pick one up.

Bikes: too many

hed 3s are some of the stronger carbon wheels out there. I have one on my road bike and it's pretty nice.

dunno if i need it anymore though, interested parties can pm me lol (uh, tubular, shimano freehub, i could throw on a fixxer though for fg use)

i just sold my trispoke. no real reason to have one unless you're racing. the wheel just made me more paranoid about bike theft.

Fat Carbon wheels look goofy on thin steel frames.

An expensive carbon wheel that isn't truable isn't what I would call practical.
