Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Just out of curiousity, where does dura ace track cranks rank in comparison to other company cranks of roughly the same price range? The only thing I know from my own knowledge is that dura ace cranks are NJS approved verses most other cranks which are not except the sugino 75's. Is it valued as a nice set of cranks only because it is NJS approved? Thanks in advance for the enlightenment & dropping of knowledge.

While stuff with NJS are nice, their price will be 5 times more than regular parts that are function in the same manner.

Dura Ace cranks' price are probably higher or near 75's, and quality is probably slightly higher.

Dura Ace cranks are probably the most popular on the race scene. SRAM Omniums are very good, maybe better. They are relatively new on the race scene.

NJS DOES NOT mean a product is better. Actually, it means that a product provides no competitive advantage to the rider. The NJS stamp is the restrictor plate of Japanese Keirin racing. It ensures that all the bikes are essentially the same and do not affect the outcome of the race. This is why Keirin racers don't use clipless pedals, carbon fiber, carbon wheels, discs, aero tubing, etc...that racers from local to the world level use. They are trapped in a 80s technology time warp. Seriously.

It's like if you belonged to a Vintage Car Racing club and the rules of the event stated that you could not use any modern technology on your car. Only period correct components.

Shimano probably lobbied really hard to get NJS approval for their cranks, hubs, cogs, and chainrings being that they are a Japanese company. THE biggest Japanese bike component company.

I'm sure that the next version of the Dura Ace Track Cranks (whenver they decide to make them) will use external bearings (like Omniums) and will not be NJS compliant.

Once again, carleton gives a very very elaborate explanation.

Back to ironic hipster sarcasm for me.
