Best clipless that wont pop out round 100$?
 

So, ive tried ultegra mtb clipless, SPD SL (have now, but need new ones so looking anyways) and cages
i hate cages which i have on my fuji track pro right now.

basically, i had the spdsl for about 7 months, and once i went to a higher gearing, they started popping out. this was with brand new 0 float and hte normal cleats (tried both), and tension all the way up.

so, id like to buy a new set of pedals, around 100.00 all in that wont pop out when i slow hard, or skid, or pull up to hard when pedaling.

any ideas?

My SPDs don't pop out, though some people seem to have problem with this. With SPDs, I've noticed than an upward pull combined with inversion of the foot will cause them to suddenly pop out. I don't know if its a design flaw or a safety feature, but I accidentally unclipped a few times until I learned not to do that when hammering or attempting to slow down and it hasen't happened since, even with the tension set relatively low. I currently use a variety of SPDs (mnt) and Look Keo Max (road). Look Keo pedals are excellent and less prone to pop out with sloppy pedaling. I have also used crank brothers pedals...never had a problem with those popping out either, but I dislike them for other reasons. Many people rave about Atacs, but I've never tried those.

Maybe your cleats are worn. Did you ever consider replacing the cleats?

I've done this too by accident. But I have my tension set pretty low. Overall I like my SPDs, did they give you (yokotas13) problems when the pedals and cleats were new? Are you sure you're not twisting your ankles?

My 105 SPD-SL feels pretty damn solid, I can't imagine pulling out of those but I have popped out with SPDs. I had LOOK cleats but those wore out too easily and popped out a few times. I hear you can't pull out of Speedplays

I have yet to pull out of these. Clipping in is ultra easy. Good track clearance.

100.00 USD budget, thats about 125ish

if it were only when skidding, id say its VERY likely
BUT on sprints where i know i have halfass decent form its happening on the up pull. thats my main complaint. popping out during skids is just an inconvenience

These aren't 3 bolt but I'm sure you could find an adaptor out there some where. The crank brothers egg beaters will NOT pop out under and circumstances unless you twist your ankle. In fact the design holds them tighter the harder you pull up on them. shimano shoes i have use the two bolt cleats they do as well. just nota fan of crank brothers.
used them in the MTB days last year and year before, and dumped them for hte Shimano SPD for offroad

Speedplays rock because if you do skid and twist the back end around you won't pop out.

yokotos13, get them used off ebay. Mine are years old and they work just fine.

The fact the person lists SAU as a shipping option and with a price is a good sign.

spdsl are maintainance free where speedplays are not.

What maintenance do speedplays need? I have yet to do anything other than clean them once in a while. If something wears out you can replace it. Better than buying a whole new pedals/cleat set like other pedals.

time atac...but the older ones or the aliums - don't like the nicer onces with the square clamp

I honestly haven't had a problem with my Eggbeaters (I have the QuattroSL's) with a 48-17 gearing.

You didn't tighten the tension on your SPD SL pedals. From the factory they are set to the very lightest setting. Put them at least to the middle of the tension range.
