Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I had an S3X for a while but didn't like it. Even though the gears are closer together than they are in the AW hub, they were still too far apart for me. I ended up using only two. I sold the hub.

I've had an S3X on one of my bikes for many years now; even did a couple century rides on it. It's a nice hub. but rather odd gear ratios IMO: 0.625/0.75/1.0
It uses two sets of three planet gears to get the lower two ratios, high gear directly engages with the hub shell. I would have preferred gearing more like the old ASC hub, with two closely spaced high ratios and a large jump to low gear for headwinds and hills. ASC ratios were 0.75/0.90/1.0

Tired of having to buy parts for my new commuter build i decided to convert my Peugeot MTB to single speed for fun and simplicity. I ride on 10 kilometers in contryside.
Road stem, Mtb bars, 40 -16 ratio with Medium chainring, Campagnolo derailleur turned to chain tensionner. Other parts come form my previous commuter.

Looks good! Nothing wrong with a Peugeot. At age 63 and reasonably fit, I really like my Armata's stock 48/16. All my riding is urban. I wonder if you might wanna go a little stronger than 40/16 for downhills, but 2.5 ratio is a darned good starter and one can always coast (as I do, even at 3.0 ) If you can stand yoobtube, there are videos on non-horizontal drop outs without tensioners. Just a PSA, nothing wrong with what you got.

Thank you. I am 46 but i have to climb one kilometer on my journey. There is an alternative route but this time with a +10% climb. Not to mention that i am riding loaded.

I feel for ya'! Got a 14 degree'er that I think the best I made it on was a 48/24 when I modded a Schwinn Wayfarer to SS. At 3.0 ratio, I get halfway, to the alt route road.

Loaded on a SS? You the man!

Hey y'all! I certainly wasn't 40 when I first started going to the forums. My last visit was 4 years ago. I just ran a bike into the ground and need a new one. I don't think I've ever bought a new bike (bought a frame once) and don't know what's the thing to do anymore. Budget is under $1k. Seems like there are a lot of cheap bikes out there but what's good?

what's good? I think the best thing is a 1980 Miyata OneThousand touring frameset, as a starting point.
long enough dropout to ride fixed or freewheel or coaster break. brake.
canti posts - so you can use vintage brakes that clear fenders and like 700c X 35mm tires for year-round riding.
black is a great color. matches everything. and stickers should be "street cred" bonus.

oh! and look - here's one in your size for sale! https://www.bikeforums.net/classic-v...84-bodged.html

wow. that's all I got to say about my internets response.... wow.

^^^ +1
Seriously, it can't get any better at that price, unless someone happens to have a relative give them a bike which works and fits perfectly.

Cool Beans. That looks like a fun bike and close to the right size but I was wondering what sort of off the rack things people dig these days. And was that posted in January?

- the Miyata - I posted it last Dec, looking at the post again.
My Beautiful Bride let me buy a RoadUno this summer, now in it's RoadTres iteration. So I'm trying to get rid of bikes. Since the Miyata is a smidge small for me, it's been halfheartedly posted for sale here in the BikeForums. The RoadUno gets ridden freewheel, as the RivBike folks expressed concerns about riding fixed with it's low bottombracket.

here's how it looks at the moment - all parts binned up: 2024 Post your Single Speed and Fixed Gear Thread (i should get some wine corks to fill in those bar ends.....)
