1) Hi Ten steel throughout
2) Steel crankset with no spider and solid chainring
3) Steel open seatpost w/o built in clamp
4) Flimsy single pivot brakes w/o quick release or centering adjustment

That Gritty is obviously heading towards that FSFG direction but who is going to trick with a Trek?

I'm surprise they are not left hand drives.

Talk about getting the shaft.

The pole dancing ad is offensive. Anyone can learn to pole dance with that DVD, not just strippers. Also, if someone is already a stripper, wouldn't they be expected to know how to pole dance before getting the job? ****'s all backwards and confusing...

Squirrelli 01-11-11 09:36 PM

It's educational, bro.

Total investment $1340. Not overpriced. Most everything on this bike is Italian. We all know where the Columbus frame is welded.

Yes. I own:
- King Headset
- Kink Headset Spacers
- Phil Grease
- Phil Tenacious Oil
- Phil Hand Cleaner (looks like dried puke...but works really well)
- Phil Hubs (on a previous bike. Remember the Concept with the pink Deep Vs?)

+1

I'm not going to drive to Home Depot to save $3 on grease when I can get some at the bike shop that I visit several times a month.

Hey, man. You are really testy about your bike.

Let me have my opinion.

You may have saved money on other components of your bike, but the whole Mash Hipster Tax is stupid. They manage to charge a "better mousetrap" premium without actually creating a better mousetrap. They are very good at marketing. Actually LOTS of people in this generation are. Everyone knows how to shoot nice photos, make nice video "edits", create great websites, write insightful blog posts, self-publish, and generally hype the h*ll out of sh*t. They make people covet. All of that is designed to make people covet.

To me, if a frame or a bike makes the person happy and it encourage them to ride more, I don't see the harm in that. It's their money to spend after all.

Who am I to judge?

carleton 01-11-11 11:06 PM

To explain how MASH got it's momentum...

This is my memory of how it happened. I could be wrong with the specifics, but the generalities stick. But here goes...

Gabe Morford was a skate photographer/videographer. Really good.

Skating went from big in the 70s to bust in the 80s to OK in the 90s and HUGE in the late 90s and into 2000s. Skating is 90% image, 10% tricks. So, image management is *very* important. It's built into the culture. Skaters can be some of the biggest dbags around with a "you aren't a skater so piss off" attitude.

Part of image management is marketing. I'm an ex BMX photographer and I can tell you that the right photograph can make ANY trick look HUGE. So there is that angle. Then there is videography as skate videos took off big time in the 90s and 2000s. More media and skaters got more media expertise as skaters would only ride for "skate photographers" and "skate videographers". Walter Iooss couldn't get close to 99% of these guys. I actually got put on the freelance shooter list at the SF Bay Guardian because I could get closer to skaters than any of their staffers ever could.

Then there are skate mags like Transworld. And products. LOTS and LOTS of products (decks, shoes, shirts, etc...). They learned how to whip kids from 10 to 19 into a ******** frenzy.

So, there is this big skateboarding media, image management, product management, hype machine, etc... INFRASTRUCTURE.

Skaters hate BMXers, mostly because they compete for spots or time at skate parks...or the fact that BMX pegs scratch the h*ll out of grinding spots around town.

Then came fixed gears. For some reason FGs became "The New Skateboard"

February 2008:

Not sure why skaters took to FG bikes, but they did.

Now, guess what? You've got this great (aforementioned) infrastructure already in place. But, now instead of marketing to 10-19 year olds, they market to 19-25 year olds with the same skill and effectiveness.

First them made a video in 2007. They are great videographers, remember?

People went apesh*t over it!

And they made a DVD

People bought it for $40!

Consider it a book AND a DVD for $40.

Carleton do you have any of your BMX/skate photos online like on a flickr? I want to see them. /notbeingadickgenuinelyinterested

Chapter 3:

So, around the same time, the two most awesomest bikes in the FG world were the:
Bianchi Pista Concept: Pure race, pure IDon'tCareIfItsNotSteel awesome
http://velospace.org/files/SimonMayB...staConcept.jpg

And the Cinelli SuperCorsa Pista.
Super Espensive. Super Lugged. Super Hard to Find. If sex were a bike...
http://static.lfgss.com/attachments/...elli_pista.jpg

Also, at the time ANYTHING "Cinelli" was considered amaaaaaazing. Remember, back then anything old or foreign must be good...especially Italian stuff.

So, what's better than a Pista Concept or a Cinelli? How about a Cinelli Pista Concept?!!

Yesssss!!!!

Nooooo...

For some reason it didn't take off.

BUT! Sprinkle some pixie dust on it and you get:
