May I suggest you go to the cops, explain the situation and find out what your legal options are. You may learn that you are well within your legal right to rescue that abandoned bicycle. No more guilt.

Another update: Last night I'm walking down the sidewalk and turn left near the Raleigh in question. I see a guy with tools working on his biycle. I look closely because I know a thing or two about repair and could offer help, but he seems engrossed and I'm on the cell phone so I keep walking. I pass the Raleigh and notice the front wheel is missing. WTF, I think and keep walking. I get about five paces when I connect the missing wheel with the guy hunched over his bike. What to do? Do I confront the guy about the wheel or do I just keep walking and let it go? F it, I say, and just keep walking. Seems that tag the city attached was an invitation to come and take what you want. (The wheel was a POS, steel, heavy, certainly no stopping power, and 26 inch, I'm sure the thief had no clue that his front wheel is now smaller than his rear).
The vultures have descended and now the story ends. |

I did not have sexual relations with that woman. . .

sorry to keep bringing this up, but as I walked past the bike yesterday I noticed the front wheel was lying next to the rear wheel. I assume the thief tinkered with it for awhile and couldn't figure out how to make it work so he put it back and went on his way. He could have put it back where he found it by bolting on the fork. The bike is near death and will be in a landfill before the new year.

Mayo, you need to give that poor soul a good home for the holidays.

I assume the thief tinkered with it for awhile.... I'm sure the thief had no clue that his front wheel is .... HOWEVER...If you have pretty much justified to yourself that this is not theft, you can't call someone else a thief just because they are doing it and not you. That would be hypocrisy, which some would call worse than stealing. |
i say take it

your turn to play thief

I have not kept this alive. I will however decidedly kill it and we can all go out and have pie and beer if Mayo requests it. (blatant attempt to get battystatus back). . . . |
Alright. Thanks for participating. Thread closed.
