I've never purchased a "complete kit" with bottom bracket. A "crankset" usually entails crank arms, chain ring, and bolts. Some companies throw in a BB to make it seem like a better deal. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'd say about 90% of cranksets don't come with bottom brackets, even less if it's used.

I'd say it's more like 99.9% of cranksets don't include the BB assembly or BB bearings in the case of external BBs. Sometimes vendors will put together a package with a crankset and BB, but they are separate packages from the factory.

I've yet to buy a crankset without a BB, so I guess it depends on what you buy.

Miche ~$160

NEW Sugino Grand Mighty 170mm (no BB) for $225. I know the seller. He's a local guy that I race with.

This crankset has been sitting in my workshop forever, waiting for a project that never happened. It was installed and removed, but never used. So, it's as good as new.

$225. I think they retail for >$350.

Also have:

Nitto B-123 Steel, Chrome. 40cm

Nitto B-125 Steel, Chrome. 39mm

$35 each

hi,so im trying to upgrade my crankset on my motobecane messenger, but i would like to keep a 48tooth count, could you guys recommend me any? and if you could recommend one thats white or chrome that would be nice too haha

ps i was looking at the sugino messanger but it seems hard to come by one with 48teeth.

cc700 01-28-11 09:18 AM

kazane kz1 should be 48t

sram s300 has a 48t

some origin8 cranks on ebay probably have 48t

white cranks sound disgustingly awkward looking, except on a black bmx dj or big hit bike

yummygooey 01-28-11 09:34 AM

SRAM Omniums come with 48t. If you keep your eye on eBay, you can find something close to the price range of the Messenger. I got my brand new Omniums for $130 shipped with a BB.

Ok sorry i have another question guys. If i was to just get the sugino messenger chain ring, what are some cranks that would fit on it, i was looking at something like pake cranks, or eightinch? sorry for the questions, im just a noob trying to learn. so thank you guys a bunch! haha

cc700, the frame is a light blue so i was trying to get a polished/white/baby blue look goin on, each to their own though haha.

also i was on bike island and this crankset seems to be decent?

is it worth it though or should i go with something you guys suggested?

I would have a hard time hauling cargo/commuting on a featherweight track steed ;)

My "tank" weighs in around 25 pounds with racks and studded (super heavy) tires and can be left locked up without me getting paranoid about someone jacking it...

I also forget that not everyone lives on a giant hill that is covered in sand/snow/salt/ice/slush 5 months out of the year ;)

Yes, I also have an "Ice Bike" built around a Surly Karate Monkey with 296 stud Nokians (I average 12 mph on this bike).

When I need my Ice Bike, I need my Ice Bike and I appreciate it.

Otherwise, with dry pavement and no load to carry, I ride my F-16.

I've set the F-16 up for agility, braking and acceleration.

It doesn't go that fast, but it does "quick" really well (I average 15 mph in traffic).

I have a third bike set up for a longer commute, 15 miles each way, and I have biased it towards speed (I average 19.7 mph in traffic).

Of the three, I prefer the quick bike over the fast bike and the ice bike.

So I actually clicked on this thread because I thought it would be one of those: "hey, look at these $300 cranks on a $500 bike; isn't that silly" threads . . . :innocent:

We don't actually ride bikes; that would get in the way of sitting in front of the computer and talking about them, duh.

I was expecting this: http://www.instantinception.com/

So I clicked on it and waited about 5 seconds before I realized what the difference was. Then I promptly clicked on it several more times.

I read that they stole the Inception plot from a Scrooge McDuck Cartoon. True Story.
