Bottom Bracket Options and Size
 

Long time lurker, first time thread starter
I just got a Sugino Maxy crankset off ebay. I want to use it on a conversion. The frame i'm using is a bianchi from the 80's. The crankset came with the original BB but:twitchy: the bike is threaded and sized for an italian BB. Velo Orange has italian BB's for 24 bucks in several sizes.
How do i know what length spindle i need? I assume 103mm but i want to be sure!

What do you guys and girls think of the VO bottom brackets? Is there another italian BB that you would recomend?

Looks like the Maxy requires a BB spindle length of at least 121.

I've had the opportunity to play with the VO threadless bottom brackets; if they're any indication of the rest of their line they make a really nice product.

that wasn't helpful. does anyone use a sugino maxy double crankset? if so, what size spindle do you use? is your chainline straight? is there some sort of formula to figure out a spindle length. FYI, the sugino maxy i bought is old, from the 80's

I edited about 45 seconds after I posted. I misread the original post while I was distracted and completely missed that you already had a crank picked out.

Thing is, even if you get a spindle that's way long you can still make it work by using a spacer... you might screw up your q but at least you won't have wasted 50 bucks on a bottom bracket.

121mm is most likely the length for a the standard crankset, which is sort of long for a single-ringed crankset.

Quick search of BF shows your Maxy COULD be ISO taper, which is the more Italian standard of tapers.

Do you have pictures of the your set of Maxy? I'd do a quick search on Velobase to see what shows up on there.

I've never been able to figure out how to post pics on here from my computer. Right now i can tell you that they are JIS, and they are designed for two chainrings. This crankset didn't come with the Bianchi, I got them off ebay. That being said, the whole ISO/Italian thing shouldn't apply, right? The type of interface, JIS or ISO, is a direct relation between the spindle and the crank, Right? If i figure out the spindle length and then put the wrong style on, it'll screw up my chainline by about a half cm in one direction or the other, right? I'll put pictures on photobucket tomorrow and post a link to that. Thanks

Putting an crank with an ISO interface on a JIS spindle could cause the crank to bottom out on the taper. If that happens, you won't be able to get the crank tight enough on the spindle to keep it from wobbling and ruining the crank. It's not likely to happen, but the only way to know for sure is to try it. As an alternative, consider punting the Maxy on ebay and purchasing a crank like the FSA gimondi.

It could be worse though. You could be building a French bike.

You could test fit it to a BB, measure the resulting chainline and the spindle length of the test BB and calculate a new spindle length to get the chainline you want.
