Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

As a nyc messenger i have been hit by a van, "crushed" between two taxis, and smashed into 3 open taxi doors. Its dangerous out here and thats why i ALWAYS wear a helmet.

i lurk on the bike messenger listserv, and it happens all the time. at least once or twice a month that i hear about, probably more. on that note, if anyone has any spare cash, mybe you should consider donating a couple bucks to the BMEF: https://www.bicyclemessenger.com/

Not a messenger, but I routinely move through CC Philly traffic. I get it at least once every two months. Mostly just small stuff so far (I am crossing fingers as I type). I got doored a month ago, but luckily I wasn't moving fast. The pedal came around a ripped up my calf and ankle. The guy who did it, cowered in his van and locked his door. Wouldn't even say sorry. I just got up, straightened out my bars, and rode off. The week before that I got squeezed into trolley tracks by a minivan-mom on the phone. I went down, but saved myself. Like NYCBM I alwys wear a helmet, no matter how *uncool* it is.

I just got hit for the first time in my life, my new fixey wheel is toast,or perhaps pie is the better pastry. anyhow, yuppie bastard pulling out of coffee line in to bike lane in to my back wheel. Id like to say luckily i wasnt hurt, but in my un-employed state some flow would be super nice.

i haven't been hurt in quite a while, and i'm just vain enough to think it's because i learned something from many of my mishaps...

always wear shoes
don't carry a garden rake
rim cement is worth the hassle
lsd only after dark

5 or 6 years ago i was pulling my younger son on one of those half-bikes that attaches to the seat post, and i had just about come to a stop when the steerer of my fork broke. he was fine, although he didn't like the sight of my bloody knees.
