Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Totally torn on what to do re fixed gear I loaded my father...

Ok so a few (4 maybe?) years ago when we had the IRO SSFG group buy I got one of the frames...at the same time there was a Miche Primato group that I helped organize so the bike is built with that Miche Primato crank, hubs, seatpost, FSA Orbit X headset and I built the wheels with Niobium 30 rims....anyway I think it's a pretty nice fixed gear.

Anyway a couple of years ago I loaded the bike to my father who has used it for training (he races road bikes) and at the time I had no time to ride it...well now I need to get into shape and I want to do some fixed gear riding...but my dad has my bike and honestly he has given me so much over the years I think I should give him a fixed gear...but on the other hand I want my IRO...I specced it out just the way I wanted.

What do I do?

i'm assuming you're debating whether to get yourself a new bike or your dad a new bike right?

Easy - you talk to your dad about it and figure it out instead of asking a bunch of strangers on the internet.

you can think about getting a new iro - the prices and overall build is pretty great for the price and you wont be disappointed.

...Well, you COULD just build the exact same bike as much as you possibly can, and get a matching bib/jersey/shorts etc so that you and your dad can ride together and look like a 2 man SS racing team =]

Are you guys the exact same size? (who fits the frame better?)
Who has more money? (If dad, is he the kind of dad that might kick some cash in your direction and help you out on a new one?)
How much is your dad riding it?

As Scrod said, give yer dad a call. At least you have a dad you can ride with.

I'm sure you did a great build on that bike, but no doubt you could come up with another great build if you had to.

Do you and your dad live close? Maybe you could work out a joint custody agreement.

Regardless, talk to him and come experience the alternating ecstasy and anguish that is Central PA fixed gear riding.

Get pops a tri bike, and suggest, politely, that he should be doing triathlons. Convince him that the fit is all wrong for tri-training.

Keep IRO.

Ok so yea loaned not loaded, not sure about that one.

I'm sure if I said I wanted the bike back he would give it right back...I just know that he has enjoyed riding it and takes it out once or twice a week. I want him to have a fixed gear...but at the same time I want mine back.

He has more money...but I'm not broke by any means, both my wife and I have good paying jobs. Both of us are close enough in size that the 56cm fits us with minimal adjustment.

I think I may just buy him a IRO Mark V for Father's Day.....and no. No matching jerseys.

sound like that IRO is more fitted to you....perhaps get some input from him on what he would change about the ride, and build him a new IRO mark V more suited to him. maybe he wants a different handlebar set up...maybe he would prefer longer/shorter cranks....diff saddle, etc.... that way you get the build thats more suited to you, and he gets a brand new ride allot like yours but slightly more suited to him.

i would just ask him questions on what he would do to make your build better for him, then suprise him with a brand new ride that fits those requirements
