Agreed, very sound advice. That's been my experience too. People who passed our comprehensive exam with honors aren't even working in the field the degree was for. I passed without honors and I got two jobs in the field almost immediately. Both of them were because of the people I met during my academic career.

My GPA was high as hell, but the actual number didn't mean anything. It was what it took to achieve that GPA that impressed my professors, who then recommended me for a job on campus.

As simple as it seems, sometimes just being able to do the damn job right can make you or break you. There were a lot of people in my program who were book smart, but that didn't translate to actually doing the job. It's like the difference between researching how to fix bikes, and actually getting your hands dirty and wrenching.

Maybe its a New York thing.

I know that happens a lot, but I also know some degrees are an absolute meal ticket. You get such and such degree and you are guaranteed a job with a decent salary. You might have to move around and look a little bit, but I have absolutely no regrets about earning my masters (I can't picture how I would live without it now) and I'm strongly considering going for a doctorate. These days, if you got the ability, you're basically buying graduate degrees with time and money. That investment will return to you in the long run.

Gotta think long term, I want to be doing what I want for the next 20 years, not something I "kinda" like.

today i tested out my new drum brake front wheel and its awesome, rain bike is also now fixed gear which is also great

having brakes on a fixed gear bike is such a strange sensation

on my way home i had the most awful head/crosswinds ive ever ridden in. weatherspark says 40 but ive been in 40 before, this mustve been 50+. almost knocked me clean over

luckily i survived and now im gonna take a nap because im running on <3 hrs sleep and i have to go into the city later for triple date night with frenz at a (hopefully) bangin mexican joint

Today I got a set of used Single Digit 7's for my SS mountain conversion for $20 at our co-op/recyclery. Saved me some cash and now I've got everything I need to finish. The guys running the place are awesome. Lots of help and advice. Might try to help out once I'm a little bit more knowledgable.

beginning to strip the paint of the premium brew, pain in the ass process. should I remove the anodizing off of the crank and wheels?

Mumonkan 03-23-13 04:07 PM

Wheels would probably be a pain in the ass, unless you can get your hands on a big vat of oven cleaner

You're better off just paying someone to media blast it.

I stripped the ano off a chainring with some cheap Drano type product, it worked well but it left the aluminum kind of chalky looking. It fit the look of the bike so I left it as is.

Are you repainting or clearing the raw frame?

Man, GED was stupidly easy.

Today I put in 70 miles on the 930, and yes it sucked in the wind.

SpeshulEd 03-23-13 07:01 PM

Well, compared to 70 miles, my 21.5 is pretty measly. The longest I've gone at once though.

I was also shot at and almost hit by a boat. Gotta love AZ.

blondieyo 03-23-13 07:04 PM

Today I realized I missed a pub crawl for my university that happened on Friday night, apparently the largest shirted pub crawl in the southern hemisphere. Oh well, there's always next year....

All pub crawls should become shirtless at some point.

I'm halfway through the process now, but that or "soda" blasting looks like a good alternative. Probably won't be too much to have done either, and would save a lot of time. Thanks.

Jandro 03-23-13 11:45 PM

Today I enjoyed the ridiculously beautiful weather. 77 miles and 4,700 ft of awesome.

Close, I was riding down New River Rd when I heard the gun shot and it hit behind me...to be fair, it was a good 100 yards behind where it hit, it was just some idiot out there shooting, saw me and tried to scare me. New River is a fairly quiet, 50mph road, nice views, no shooting signs posted everywhere...only, there's never any cops, so people speed like crazy, there are long straight sections, so people drag race on it, and people in AZ are idiots and shoot everywhere.

The boat happened on Lake Pleasant Pkwy, right after I went over the 303 and it goes back to 2 lanes - there's hardly a bike lane, but I was still over quite far...no traffic coming and the guy didn't even get over. I could have slapped the boat, had I tried. If I ever see a teal ford 150 pulling a tan boat with a teal stripe down the side of it when I'm driving, I'm gunning for them. (not really)

I really didn't let it bother me and after the boat I started riding more in the road as a nice EFFUU to the idiots, let them slow down for me and pass when they have the open lane.

It was windy and I rode slow as hell, but its getting better.

just got off work, had a couple schwartz at work now watching casa de mi padre and drinking beer.

Adrian_ 03-24-13 08:10 AM

Its not even noon yet and my day already sucks. My granny put a huge dent and scrapes into the rear passenger side door of my/her car. She said it's not getting fixed for a while which means i'm probably going to have to pay for it.

:roflmao: I love HIMYM. Today I woke up, having no idea how I got home last night from chillin/drinking in the city. My friend and I went out with 2 girls. One of them he's been dating recently, and her friend...lets just say I had better conversations with a frying pan.

TMonk 03-24-13 09:40 AM
